Just the cricket: Eating insects is good for us and for the environment, scientists claim

It might be a while before they appear on the shelf at Tesco.

But scientists claim adding insects to our diet would be good for us and the environment.

Crunching into crickets or snacking on grilled caterpillar is apparently a means to a nutrient-rich diet that also helps reduce pests and puts less strain on the planet than eating conventional meat.

Some insects in their dried form are said to have twice the protein of raw meat and fish, while others are rich in unsaturated fat and contain important vitamins and minerals.

Experts believe they could one day be marketed as a healthy alternative to fatty snacks.

In most of Europe, bug-eating is largely restricted to the belated realisation that there has been an unwelcome addition to the salad.

It is common elsewhere, however, with some 1,700 species of bug eaten in 113 countries.

No one is stopping these people from eating bugs if they want to.

But if they think I'm gonna start eating bugs just because they think their emotional devotion to the cult of environmentalism gives them the right to tell the rest of us what to do, they can go POUND SAND.

“But scientists claim adding insects to our diet would be good for us and the environment.”

I just thought I’d mention that people with certain food allergies can get very, very sick from eating insects. The chitin in the exoskeletons of cicadas and many species of beetles, for example, can cause a severe reaction in people who are allergic to shellfish.

I'll take fried crickets over beets anytime.........

I ran away from home at the age of 9 because my mom tried to feed me beets........When I finally returned, they had moved and left no forwarding address........

I didn’t realize how disgusting crawdads look until I got one on my plate. It looked so much like a nasty bug, I just couldn’t eat it.

As far as bugs go, no way. I wouldn’t have a problem going vegetarian, as I don’t eat much meat, but I couldn’t stomach bugs. I don’t think this idea will get much support in this country. Why eat bugs, unless you’re starving?

“Bingo. And only if they eat one of these critters.”

I saw a nature show about the Bullet Ant a while back. The host allowed himself to be purposely stung on the arm by one just to show the severity of its venom. He said it felt like his entire arm was on fire within minutes, and it stayed that way for hours afterwards.

Fun stuff. o_O

I've been driven just crazy enough that I've been considering the Donner Pass Diet.

"Progressives" are the only menu offering so far.

Shrimp, lobster, crab -- all just aquatic equivalents of insects

If you eat cereal, you’re already eating bugs, albeit in pieces.

I’d go vegan before I would eat that shit, thank you very much

I am vegan and I wouldn't eat that crap. What's wrong with suggesting that people eat more veggies? Why eat insects? (and I'm not talking about the 'insect rights' aspect of it. I'm just saying eating insects when you can have wonderful veggies and baked goods doesn't make sense.)

It all depends on how hungry you are. There may come a time when you grab one of those little white worms and say “Good grub!”

Next they’ll be telling us to eat feces.

Or they can turn feces into cucumbers.

As the old saying in Asia goes: anything that moves is eaten.

In Canton, it is said that the people will eat anything with legs, except a table -- and anything with wings, except an airplane.

It’s no joke. Some wacko lefty will decide that this should be made into a law - all fast food hamburgers must consist of 10% of ground locusts.
Don’t laugh! Look back at this posting in 2028 and see if you laugh.
