We're not going to pay AP's extortion fees and we're not going to allow them to control free speech!
Recent AP vs fair use threads ^ | June 17, 2008 | Jim Robinson

This is our Boston tea Party.

The Associated Press wants to levy a $12.50 and up license fee (aka extortion fee) on any blogger who quotes more than 4 words from one of their propaganda pieces. This is an outrageous attempt to control the blogosphere and free speech itself. To hell with their license fee and to hell with the AP. Any AP article that gets posted to FR will be jettisoned into the harbor posthaste.

Please do not post any AP material to FR excerpted or not.

How ‘bout charging AP for posting, say $2 a word? Why should anyone spread their product around for free?

Okay, my question is this.

What about other news sources that say “from the Associated Press”?

Such, as say, something from the Omaha World-Herald, and its source is listed as the Associated Press?

This has got to be a real nuisance for you guys, and I don’t plan on contributing to it.

Could we get a list of AP “papers?” I’d be happy to not click on any of them either.

The AP is just relying on the fact that most bloggers don’t have the money to go to court and face them to protect obvious fair use. I’m sure AP will try to get an idea of the financials of any blogger before sending any threatening letters.

As you all know, FR got hammered for the same, with some sites not even allowing the posting of short extracts. FR could have prevailed against such types if it had a sugar daddy willing to put up six years worth of operating expenses for a defense.

What’s the AP?

A publishing service for useless liberal drivel and rarely accurate psuedo news. They won't be missed.

I think the Omaha World-Herald would pay AP.

It certainly couldn’t/woudn’t pass through the fees.

Take FOX: probably 1/4 of it breaking news links are derived from AP. They’ll pass these costs to their advertisers.

Something is wrong here. How do they prove a string of 5 words came from their work? And who has authority to make you pay?

Maybe I’m not understanding what’s going on.

AP has become a vessel for the anti-American left allowing
their perverted commentary to seep into the news print.
If it’s from AP, it’s usually slanted, biased, and/or lacking context. I think we’ll get along fine without them.

Furthermore, no self respecting fish would want to end up in that mullet wrapper.....

That’s a good question. I see a lot of AOL or Yahoo! articles, for example, that have come from the AP.

I thought we couldn’t post directly from the AP (hostedap.org) already?
