we find that they guarantee the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation That is freakin' awesome! The whole country just became must issue CCL! Not exactly but I suspect it will eventually also become a SCOTUS case.

Uh-oh. Can this ruling be used to prohibit self defense outside the home?”

No. The “such as” is an example without limitation. It like saying “Sports cars go fast, such as a Porsche.” It doesn’t mean there are not other fast cars besides a Porsche.

Agreed. I think Scalia wrote it that way because it specifically addresses the case before the court. Heller's case came about because he was denied a gun in his home, where he was assaulted. So Scalia called attention to that particular use of a gun as his example.

They did mention reasonable control, but gave specific examples to make it clear what that is.

However, it does appear this does not threaten “may-issue” regulations as it would perhaps still be “reasonable” even to Scalia here (keep in mind he had to keep Kennedy to be victorious).

I will take this ruling over anything else; it still is pretty broad and a big victory for us.

"This means that we’re ONE VOTE FROM TYRANNY!! How is this a victory?"

Consider any battle that you survive a victory. Now is the time to rejoice, we have won the fight!

When you have rested and healed your wounds, there will be time to consider what must be done next to eliminate the threats to our Republic. Our freedom requires that we remain constantly alert to the dangers posed by our enemies

if it were not for the tons of conservative negative feedback on the Meirs appointment by Bush, we would probably be royaly screwed on this Heller decision.

Too bad FR wasn't around when Reagan appointed O'Connor and Kennedy to the court.

Reagan really screwed us with those two.

thanks much for the interps. My concern is if this opens the door to state and local jurisdictions to limit concealed carry and selling of weapons in their respective areas. Numerous cities are already attempting to limit places where CCW are allowed -- all government buildings and parks, and city streets, etc., etc.
Any thoughts on that?

Is this one of them?

The stock market is now down below 11,600, a drop of 200+ points.

Does anyone want to try to make the case that “it doesn’t matter who’s President”?

Only Ginsberg and Breyer were appointed by Bill Clinton. The other 7 were appointed by Republicans.

Welfare moms and immigrants on the public tit seem to be outbreeding red-blooded Americans even with the more religious/family oriented standpoint of conservatives.

The first two on the public dole, you hit it on the head, that's our problem. You can also add many of the "yung uns" out there that don't know any better, then again you mentioned the education system which would cover them. I can see the need of a safety net, but if I was running things, those welfare people who are able bodied, they'd be in school learning a skill or if there are "jobs Americans will not do," they would be doing them, otherwise, if there are no family willing to take care of them, I like the Michael Savage solution of turning old Army bases into dormitories to house the ones that won't work. I have other ideas too but that's for another time.

In sum, we hold that the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense. Assuming that Heller is not disqualified from the exercise of Second Amendment rights, the District must permit him to register his handgun and must issue him a license to carry it in the home.

* * *

We are aware of the problem of handgun violence in this country, and we take seriously the concerns raised by the many amici who believe that prohibition of handgun ownership is a solution. The Constitution leaves the District of Columbia a variety of tools for combating that problem, including some measures regulating handguns, see supra, at 54–55, and n. 26. But the enshrinement of constitutional rights necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table. These include the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home. Undoubtedly some think that the Second Amendment is outmoded in a society where our standing army is the pride of our Nation, where well-trained police forces provide personal security, and where gun violence is a serious problem. That is perhaps debatable, but what is not debatable is that it is not the role of this Court to pronounce the Second Amendment extinct.

We affirm the judgment of the Court of Appeals.

It is so ordered.

“The four justices who dissented should be impeached immediately.”

But I’ll bet they would be the first to affirm a “right” to kill babies in the womb which is nowhere in the Constitution.

Exactly. Aren’t you in the Chicago area, too? On Don and Roma this morning they had a sound byte of him saying just that. He said something like “we want to keep guns out of the hands of gangbangers and children.”

Why do these people continue to think that gangbangers are buying guns at legal gunshops? Furthers their agenda, I guess.
