Are Volcanoes Melting Arctic?

Climate Change: While the media scream that man-made global warming is making the North Pole ice-free, another possible cause is as old as the Earth itself. They just have to look deeper.

To the delight of Al Gore and the rest of the Gaia groupies, scientists at the National Snow & Ice Data Center in Colorado are predicting that the North Pole will be completely free of ice this summer. The apocalyptic headlines already are starting to appear.

"From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important," says the center's Mark Serreze. "There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water."

From a media standpoint, this is another sign of the apocalypse — proof positive of man-made climate change. But we've heard this before.

In August 2000 the New York Times ran a piece claiming the pole was free of ice for the first time in 50 million years, long before SUVs roamed Earth. As earth scientist Patrick Michaels noted, "It was retracted three weeks later as a barrage of scientists protested that open water is common at or near the pole at the end of summer."

As reported in the June 26 edition of ScienceDaily, a research team led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) has uncovered evidence of massive undersea volcanic eruptions deep beneath the ice-covered surface of the Arctic Ocean. "Explosive volatile discharge has clearly been a widespread, and ongoing, process," according to the WHOI team.

Great pics of the ice. Perhaps we should change “A picture is worth a thousand words” to “A picture iced a thousand warming-turds.”

Would be a fascinating physics project to estimate how much heat the volcanoes put out, how much the water temperature in the area of the volcanoes is raised and how far the water moves before mixing reduces the temperature to ambient at the depth of the volcanoes and/or temperature change with depth.

An interesting discussion of changes in water temperature with depth can be found here:

Temperature of Ocean Water

Volcanoes melting the arctic.. dumbest thing I’ve heard all day.

There are over 3 million undersea volcanoes. Why do you think the arctic area is immune from volcanic activity? You just signed up today to make that remark. Do some research.

"The Land That Time Forgot"

Great movie! A true sci-fi classic.

"Negotiating an underwater tunnel [beneath the ice] to gain the island's interior, those aboard U-33 are amazed to discover a tropical prehistoric world kept warm by volcanic forces. Here dinosaurs that should be long extinct live and roam, as do a curious race of humanoid savages that appear to exhibit all the various phases of Man's evolutionary development. To survive long enough to repair and replenish the U-boat, wartime enemies must put aside their differences and cooperate with one another. But not everyone is playing from the Kumbaya songbook... The Land That Time Forgot is a thoroughly old fashioned sci-fi/fantasy adventure of the type they weren't really making anymore even in 1975. A lot of this has to do with the script sticking to Burroughs' Victorian style. (His Caprona tales were first published in 1918; as late as World War II he'd still be cranking out novels in the writing style of the 19th Century.) The film's a throwback to the likes of the original King Kong and potboilers such as Unknown Island (1948) and The Land Unknown (1957), only in color."

Volcanic eruptions reshape Arctic ocean floor: study
June 25, 2008 | AFP

Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday.

The eruptions -- as big as the one that buried Pompei -- took place in 1999 along the Gakkel Ridge, an underwater mountain chain snaking 1,800 kilometres (1,100 miles) from the northern tip of Greenland to Siberia.

Scientists suspected even at the time that a simultaneous series of earthquakes were linked to these volcanic spasms.

But when a team led of scientists led by Robert Sohn of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts finally got a first-ever glimpse of the ocean floor 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) beneath the Arctic pack ice, they were astonished.

What they saw was unmistakable evidence of explosive eruptions rather than the gradual secretion of lava bubbling up from Earth's mantle onto the ocean floor.

From Ohio State University News, Dec 2007...

EARTH'S HEAT ADDS TO CLIMATE CHANGE TO MELT GREENLAND ICE

COLUMBUS , Ohio -- Scientists have discovered what they think may be another reason why Greenland 's ice is melting: a thin spot in Earth's crust is enabling underground magma to heat the ice.

They have found at least one “hotspot” in the northeast corner of Greenland -- just below a site where an ice stream was recently discovered.

The researchers don't yet know how warm the hotspot is. But if it is warm enough to melt the ice above it even a little, it could be lubricating the base of the ice sheet and enabling the ice to slide more rapidly out to sea.

Please do not attempt to bring FACTS to the Gorebbel’s Warming debate or you will be banned from the scientific consensus.

Absolutely amazing the lengths that people will go to hide from reality. Of course volcanos are causing the Arctic to melt. Isn’t it obvious? It couldn’t be the millions of tons of carbon. And the carbon and other GHG increases in the atmosphere? Obviously caused by Leperchaun dust. And, the increased rate of class 5 hurricanes is caused by super big dragon flies from the Bermuda Triangle. You’re implication that AGW is a vast left wing conspiracy reminds me of Hillary’s vast right wing conspiracy. You’re not Hillary are you?

Wake up and face reality. It appears that we are changing the climate. As long as dopes keep denying it, it gives guys like Al Gore a platform. Pathetic.

I know you’re making a joke but, no kidding, there was a report a week ago that claimed excess sunlight was absorbed into the earth and caused the interior to heat up. Totally bogus but it’s out there now and I’m sure the moonbats will be citing it for 50 years.

Was there supposed to be a < /sarc> tag anywhere in that? And if so, where?

It appears that we are changing the climate.

You have an awfully high opinion of what man can actually do.

Let me know when we can make one tornado. Just one is all I ask.

PS there isn't an increased rate of class five hurricanes.

Sorry.

If thats the case, shouldn't Florida be under water?

This has been my theory for a number of years, and I've made postings to FR stating just that.

I believe that one of the factors in any variation in climate is the ocean temperature, and that it is highly influenced by undersea volcanos.

Nothing complicated, just common sense combined with information that is available.

You'll note that the Arctic Ocean is warming from the west, up from the Aleutians and the Ring of Fire.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) pronounced (who-ee). I would change the name of my research group.

Checked out this interesting link. Tried going back in time for June 30. Did not find much change. Then I realized that the end of summer might be more interesting. So changed most recent date to August 30, 2007, and compared with that date in 1987, 1997, 2003 and 2006. Also compared those years with September 30. There is a very noticeable change using those months.
