SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.
The man with a serious chance to become the nation's first black president argues that government should instead combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.
"I have said in the past - and I'll repeat again - that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed," the Illinois Democrat said recently.
Some two dozen members of Congress are co-sponsors of legislation to create a commission that would study reparations - that is, payments and programs to make up for the damage done by slavery.

No links but last week he hinted his feelings on the subject were that words were fine, but actions would speak louder. He must have caught hell on that.
Yes, there is a thread somewhere on here with Obama’s quote. Something to the extent that reparations should be dealt with by the government “not with words, but with deeds.”
He did not say "no." The writer said he said "no." What he really said was that it would be best to ..., but in the end he will take from those that have to give to his base. He cannot be trusted and anyone with any sense knows it.

Na, he’s always been for it. It just depends upon who is audience is as to when he says America needs to pay up.
As well he should. Everyone knows that his grandmother was white. Now how could he impose reparations from his own grandmother. (which has been the whole problem with “reparations” from the get-go...our nation is too blended to find a single race in someone who had ancestors that were American slaves.)

1. I thought welfare, food stamps and racial quotas WERE reparations.
2. Wasn’t the Civil War and the lives of thousands of white and black Americans enough reparation?
3. Didn’t white Americans design and implement the underground railroad?
4. Not ALL states were slave states so why must the United States apologize?
5. Didn’t we bus inner city kids in the 70’s at taxpayer expense? If that isn’t a failed raparation, I don’t know what is.
6. Run away from raparations or this wound will never heal.
7. Didn’t Africans sell their own to English slave traders?
