FINEMAN: Will 'Country First' Boost McCain to Victory? ...(scare the bejesus out of voters)
Newsweek ^ | Thursday, August 14, 2008 | Andrew Romano

Posted on 08/14/2008 8:12:42 AM PDT by IrishMike

It’s a colonial era city in the midst of farm country. Famous for its peppermint candy and barbell factory, York also gained notoriety during the Revolutionary War when the Continental Congress stopped here long enough to draft the Articles of Confederation.

The city is a faded monument to a certain kind of American life: 18th century English and German settlements, Pennsylvania long rifles, a wariness of outsiders, social change, and Big City. This made York the perfect place for John McCain and his team to lay out their core strategy in the race against Barack Obama.

Their messages: I’m an American and he’s not; I’m a patriot and he’s not; I’m a tough son-of-a-gun willing to confront our foes, he’s not.

This cold-blooded, chest-beating theme will either give McCain a real chance to overcome long odds and win the White House — or it will consign him to the dust bin of history. For years, if not decades, McCain has positioned himself as the "thinking man’s" fighting man.He sends out the idea that he’s tolerant and eager to cross party lines, while at the same time willing to eschew ideology and fear in the name of finding practical solutions. That McCain still exists, and it is that man who appeals to independent voters. Among them, the senator still enjoys an certain je ne sais quoi. But for that very reason, he has never been all that popular with the Reagan-Bush Base — the one Lee Atwater and Karl Rove built — of Southern whites, evangelical Christians and combative necons.

...'scare the bejesus out of them. And they’re doing it by highlighting this allegedly un-American, unpatriotic, weak, somehow foreign, and mysterious character named Obama'.

What is the smell in the air........ Liberal meltdown ?

This race is over, it's just a matter of how big McCain's victory will be. And if he has any coattails. Right now I've got the gop losing 5 in the senate, maybe holding or gaining a few in the house if their house renegades continue to stand tough.

Like old Ann Coulter says, “If you want to make a liberal angry, defend America.”

Look, you pasty boys out there at “Newsweek,” politics is a bloodsport, and Mr. Obama isn’t tough enough for it.

As soon as Mr. McCain or anyone says anything the Obama disagrees with, Obama complains that someone is being “negative.”

Good Lord.

There were no neo cons in 1980 to be Reagan's base. Fineman forgets the Reagan Dems, patriots who had tired of the anti American aspects of their candidates. People who voted for the likes of Scoop Jackson who had become persona non grata in their own party. Just by the numbers of enlistments past and present into the regular forces, the Reserves and the Guard it is clear that these patriots still exist in large numbers. They also pay high taxes and receive little of substance in return as entitlements and subsidies go to other classes of people and larger segments of business. These are the folks McCain is reaching towards.

If Fineman believes he is trying to scare them he's correct. Just as the haloed one tries to frighten people about the state of the economy without govt control, their health care without govt control, and their schools withour federal govt control. Fear is a partner with politics not simply a method. It is implied in why you must vote for me, because the other guy doesn't care about you. Attitudes like Fineman's never see the other side of the coin they are criticising.

I'm not convinced "Country First" is a campaign winner for McCain. It didn't work for Dole.

On the other hand, it was tougher to make that argument against a good ole Southern boy like Clinton than it would be against Barack Hussein Obama.

I agree , it’s over. The only debate now is how big will
McCain win. All McCain needs to do is pick a safe (do no harm) VP. A decent pro life economic conservative who would
be ready to lead should somthing happen to McCain.

McCain if he doesn’t go soft will win this election by a comfortable margin. This election since Obama has been nominated has been his to lose. I know Obama has been leading but the lead is a struggle and a lot of people still aren’t paying attention. McCain is doing good with the Independents that are paying attention and he is doing better with the conservative base than Obama. Those are two indicators that he has an advantage. The key thing he needs to do is to emphasize the things that made conservatism and being a Republican great. He is hitting on one of them. American strength in the world. This one he wins hands down. The next thing he needs to emphasize is a message that fingers regulation and oppressive taxation not free trade as the reason for Businesses moving overseas. He should make it part of his economic plan to change that. It is not a coincidence that states that have the most oppressive tax code have been the ones not to benefit from the previously very good economy. There are a lot of things he could do but he needs to point us back to Reagan and make that optimism and that commitment to those things that made and make this country great the foundation of the McCain Presidency.

He should also give some speeches that hearken back to the founding of this nation. Speak to that and he will speak to the hearts and minds of conservatives. McCain could easily outshine Reagan if he doesn’t go soft and proves his metal.
I couldn’t be more proud to support him as he has shown as a clear leader in the conflict with Georgia. I’m so tired of the wimp President Bush has morphed into. Tired of his looking into the eyes of evil and calling it soft and fluffy . Being a good Christian should not be a study in self delusion. We can thank the left for this transformation. I’m ready for a man with a little fire in his belly.

It's not quite over yet because the mainstream media will do everything they can to breath new life into Obama's campaign and I'm wondering if we are going to see an August Surpise, not from McCain but from Clinton, to snatch the nomination away from him.

Not to mention the effect of McCain-Feingold kicking in 60 days before the election. The NRA and other political groups will be muzzled, and have no way to respond to Big Media's 24/7 cheerleading for Obama.

I want McCain to win, but if he loses, I want him to realize it's because of the ridiculous "reform" law that bears his name.

Lies Fineman in Newsweek Pamphlet (formerly Magazine)...[re Marxist Obama] And he’s the candidate who loves his country for the chances it’s given him.

Ahem... Mister Fineman of Newsweek Pamphlet (the same publication that lied about korans in toilets at Guantanamo causing the deaths of frenzied Newsweek believers) ...

Your precious Marxist candidate Obama is spending much of his candidacy evading questions about his past, and still won't tell us much about what he plans for you regarding "change" and "sacrifice".

Mister Obama has no pride in this country, our customs, our history, our military and its customs, and our culture; and as president, Obama would feel no urgency or need to preserve it.

Save for recent campaign rhetoric (and from left-wing groupies like you) there is nothing (NOTHING) that I have seen in anything Marxist Obama has ever said or written that has expressed as much as a molecule's worth of "love" for this wonderful country.

It will be a Great Victory for McCain and a Republican blowout recapturing control of the House and Senate. And the best news is it will mean the End of the Democrat Party. We will have one party rule by Republicans, probably for at least 20 years, until a new opposition party can be constituted. Think of what conservatives can do to bring America back to its true values in that time.

Sounds good except that most of them are RINO’s. Without actual conservatives at the helm. It will be more like Lib light

The polls I'm seeing indicate the Republicans are almost 10% more unified than the Dims, despite all McCain's problems with the Republican base (including me). I don't think a lot of Hillary supporters will vote McCain, but I do think a significant number will just not vote.
