Choosing expediency over principle, the United States and its allies are pushing Georgia's pro-Western government to accept major concessions in a cease-fire with Russia.
Despite warnings of serious consequences for Russia for its invasion of the former Soviet republic, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice heads to Georgia on Friday to try to persuade its leadership to agree to a deal that expands the mandate of Russian troops on Georgian territory.
The French-mediated proposal calls for the immediate withdrawal of Russian combat troops from Georgia, but allows Russian peacekeepers who were in the flashpoint separatist area of South Ossetia before last week's explosion of violence to remain and take a greater role there.
The draft document also does not commit Russia to respecting Georgia's "territorial integrity" but rather refers to Georgian "independence" and "sovereignty," meaning Moscow does not necessarily accept that South Ossetia and another disputed region, Abkhazia, are Georgian.
The proposed cease-fire appears to back down on previous demands from the United States and its European allies that Russia halt all military activity in Georgia and that Georgia's "territorial integrity" must be respected.

You summed this up well. It is disastorous.
good analysis.I hope you are wrong, but doubt it.
AND International peacekeeprs and allow human rights and aid in!
You are only seeing what they want you to see at this time. If efforts all fail, you will see a change, but that's what they do.
No national interest??? Have you studied this situation..obviously not. Have you studied this region? Obviously not.
Have you studied history? Obviously not.
Let’s just not go anywhere. Let’s just let the Russians and Iran carve up the mideast and Europe. Or, lets wait till we have “a dog in the fight” and that would be???Turkey? Ukraine? France?
Why don’t we go back to the isolationist Libertarian position of pre- 9-11?
you are right...still I worry about the State Dept.
That was one for the record books.
Which is it? It’s common sense. You SHOULD know that our leaders are privy to intelligence information that we have no access to. THAT is what was being referred to....
“And who will protect those who do nothing now?”
The US of course. As always. Bring on the Libertarians!
lets just all crawl into our caves and hope the russians don’t do any more incursions onto sovereign territory. and lets hope the Palis just calm down. And lets hope the Iranians make their nukes but just let them collect dust...
After all...as Obama said, This is the time for HOPE!
Georgia wasn’t sovereign in the break-away provinces, nor has it been.
I’m not thrilled with this deal, but it was probably about as good as could be hoped for. It gets things back close to what they were before, while Russia has been shown to the world as a vicious aggressor. Overall, I’d say Russia comes out behind on this.
We can’t afford to do what we want to do because we have a fifth column of leftists in the US that is still in love with Russia and libs who want to stay isolationist in the face of evil...and a western media that gets its talking points from Moscow and just re prints them.
In fact, I alerted my 22 year old that he may well be getting a letter from the draft board at some future date. I think there is a good chance we could fail to get EU and NATO backing, and we do have defense agreements with Poland, as of a day or so ago. Even if we do get the backing, I don't think the Russians will blink. I told my son, that since his major is criminology, that the MP's would be a good choice.
You have summarized the situation beautifully!
The Russian Bear is back and we are hearing the same crap that the europeans said before WWII and it was our president Reagen who stood up to the Russians.
That would be true if they stop and change course, but they never have done that before, and I don't think they will start now. This has been underway for a long time and it's only the bottom of the 2nd inning.
China is at risk as well, as their economy is tied to all.
“I alerted my 22 year old that he may well be getting a letter from the draft board ...”
I doubt that. Also, be aware that international dealings take time. I’m sure that, not only the present situation, but the future security of the Ukraine and other nations is being discussed as well. We know that the UN is worthless in this situation.....another reason why I like McCain’s proposal for a “League of Democracies.”
After that Nuke threat to Poland, my timetable advanced a lot.
Yeah, league of Nations, democracies, whatever. You still end up with foreign policy by committee and it never achieves a damn thing.
Kick them out, and rent the building or raise it. I have little use for them at all. Never have.
The nuke threat was made by some general...
I consider that more bluster than anything else.
Bluster in a negotiation is one thing, but during a conflict that has been well planned in advance and executed with purpose, is another.
There will be another event in another State to follow this one, and another and another.
You can count on it, and each time there will be more bluster.
The bluster is what they intend to do if we do not comply. It's that simple. Putin has already said the same thing months ago that he would launch against the radar and missile installations. Whether they use tactical nukes, or conventional depends on how desperate or as they like to say "angry" they are at the time.
