TODAY: Rev. Rick Warren puts Obama, McCain on the same stage (LIVE thread)
The Seattle Times ^ | 8/16/08 | Duke Helfand

Posted on 08/16/2008 11:59:35 AM PDT by XR7

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — When John McCain and Barack Obama appear on the same stage today, they will vividly demonstrate the reach that has made the Rev. Rick Warren among the most significant evangelists of his generation.

He's a megastar who leads the nation's fourth-largest church and reaches thousands of ministers through the Internet and crusades against poverty and AIDS. That globe-trotting work and his successful book — "The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?" — puts him at the vanguard of a movement that inspires young, socially conscious Christians.

But his willingness to soft-pedal political issues once central to U.S. evangelicals, such as opposition to abortion, has opened him to criticism that he has strayed from his calling to spread the Gospel.

Today's forum also is a sign of religion's importance in the 2008 presidential campaign, and the emergence of a new style of evangelical leadership on the national stage that is not tied to a single party and has broadened its social agenda beyond that of the religious right.

"This is absolutely a changing of the guard, and it suggests that the new guard of the evangelical movement is able to generate the attention and focus of both parties," said D. Michael Lindsay, a sociologist at Rice University and author of "Faith in the Halls of Power: How Evangelicals Joined the American Elite."

Warren personally invited the two candidates — "friends of mine" — via their cellphones. His event at the Saddleback Church will be broadcast live on CNN and Fox News Channel and streamed on the Web. It has among its aims "helping the church regain credibility and encouraging our society to return to civility," he said.

It's likely that fans and critics will be watching closely...

Just remember she is married to and sleeps with Alan Greenspan, now there is a thought and an image best not visuallized! UUKK!

I love my pastor and I know where I am called to serve my Community from. And I can not leave my Church unless God calls me to leave it. And He hasn’t called me elsewhere yet.

My pastor isn’t perfect but sometimes he just hates to see his “friends” get hammered, And turns a blind eye sometimes so its up to us laypeople in the congregation to help him see.

My pastor has never spoken an untruth from the pulpit and is always bold in his preaching about Hell, Jesus, sin, forgiveness and the Blood of Christ.

And so we stay.

I heard on Foxnews that Warren will not mention abortion.

So this topic has been excluded from the 'debate'. It looks like abortion, not being discussed at a 'church', and a supposed evangelical church, declares the left got is conditions met. The antiabortion folks have no problem with their declaring themselves antiabortion. The proabortion folks try to evade, coverup, and obfuscate on this subject.

Speaking of Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell:

Bush's pastor rips McCain, endorses Obama

The African American pastor who presided over two inaugural ceremonies for President Bush and officiated at the wedding of President Bush's daughter has come out strongly against Senator John McCain.

In a conference call with reporters on Friday, Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, a close friend to President Bush, questioned McCain's morality...

SNIP

Caldwell's conference call with reporters was sponsored by the Matthew 25 Network, described by ABC News as a liberal Christian Group planning to air a pro-Obama ad on Saturday during Rick Warren's religious forum with Obama and McCain.

...is that before or after she divorced her husband for Vince Gill...

...I'm an ex-Amy Grant fan.

I am an ex-Tony Campolo fan...(long ago)

...I may tune in JUST TO SEE if Warren holds their feet to the fire on abortion, gay marriage, etc.

From what I'm reading here, I will be disappointed...

..not that I haven't been for a while with Rick Warren, but I haven't kept up with his latest.

So should I waste my time and tune in, or will it just help his ratings.

As long as your pastor is teaching and preaching the True Jesus from the Bible, you are in the right place. :-)

Christians should beware when they are asked to choose between the new age gospel (many paths to god.......hmmmmmm), and Jesus. Remember, many other religions acknowledge Jesus as a teacher and prophet, but yet they won’t acknowledge what He taught, said and did for us!

Obama chooses death for someone else over ‘PROBABLY crossing the lines in terms of unconstitutionality’,

Page 87

And if we’re placing a burden on the doctor that says you have to keep alive even a previable child as long as possible and give them as much medical attention as — as is necessary to keep that child alive, then we’re probably crossing the lines in terms of unconstitutionality.
