Fla. lawmakers: Elderly resisting Obama [State Rep Geller on old Jews-almost a mob mentality]
JTA ^ | 08/26/2008

Posted on 08/26/2008 6:03:47 PM PDT by SJackson

Barack Obama has problems with Jewish seniors in Florida, say two Democratic lawmakers there.

Florida state Sen. Nan Rich told JTA that Obama surrogates have been “shocked” by the hostility they have encountered at condominiums in her area aimed at their candidate.

Steve Geller, who serves as the Democratic minority leader in the Florida state Senate and represents parts of Broward County, said he was nearly chased out of the "condos" -- shorthand for retirement communities -- when he said he backed Obama.

"I've noticed almost a mob mentality," Geller said. "I can change people's minds in a group of five or 10. When there's 300 people in the room, they feed off each other and don't want really to listen to us.”

Both lawmakers made their remarks Monday in Denver following a panel discussion on the Jewish vote held in conjunction with the Democratic convention.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) expressed confidence that Obama would do well with Jewish voters in the end, but needed to spend more time in the Sunshine State. She said more face-to-face encounters with Obama are needed.

"He needs to come down and have bagels and cream cheese in the condos and he will be fine," Wasserman Schultz said.

I guess I'm naive, but I never knew the parties had formal meetings at their conventions about Jewish voters.

They may be mighty surprised in November. Will Florida even be close this time?

“resisting” is rather loaded term with Florida “lawmakers.”

Why would Nan be shocked by Jews being hostile toward an anti-semitic?

Wow! If I were an older, Jewish voter, I’d be extremely offended that this broad wasserman completely minimizes their concerns by just saying the need to have bagels and cream cheese together!!

OMG. These people don’t realize how frightening obama really is when you think of him in real world circumstances like protecting the US, Israel, Georgia, etc. No confidence whatsoever.

What a genius.

These people know this guy named HUSSEIN and his supporters are anti-semites.

Shes not careful she could lose reelection next time to a primary challenger citing her support of the crypto-muslim.

Boy, does she know how to insult her constituients! How shallow and ignorant does she think they are? So she thinks their votes can be had for the price of a bagel! Obama eats bagels with them and that makes him kosher?!

Imagine if anyone said that McCain only needs to have some watermelon with blacks to get their vote.

“He needs to come down and have bagels and cream cheese in the condos and he will be fine,” Wasserman Schultz said.”

That was scheduled, but ultimately conflicted with his speech to 200,000 Germans at a war memorial treasured by the Nazis.

May be an especially hard choice if a nice Jewish boy Eric Cantor is the VP on the other side.

You know Obama is in trouble when he can’t even win over the older Jewish set. Especially since they have been voting Democrat since the time of Moses. ;-)

Well, maybe not naive, but...

Any, repeat, any identifiable subgroup, Jewish, gay, veterans, woodworkers, polo players who might represent extra votes if addressed as their group, will have some degree of “formal” attention in a serious campaign. That’s the ground game, GOTV (Get out the vote). In most elections, it’s going through the motions. But sometimes it wins elections. You can’t always predict. So you always do it. It’s good politics.

Get involved at a lower level in a campaign. Volunteer. Work the polls. You’ll never look at politics the same way again. You’ll meet interesting people, and some crazies. But you’ll see the political ground game. It’s the same for both parties. Of course, the better people hang out here.
