If He Wins
NATIONAL REVIEW ^ | September 22, 2008 | Jim Geraghty

Thinking the unthinkable.

Like all races, this campaign has come down to a lot of “if-then” statements.

America is already unimpressed with the Pelosi-Reid Congress. This is, with a few changes, who President Obama would be making laws with — a House Ways and Means chairman who doesn’t understand the tax laws he writes, a House speaker who does freelance diplomacy with dictators...

In the Senate, President Obama will have Robert Byrd holding the purse-strings in Appropriations, ensuring that most of the new president’s national initiatives will be based out of West Virginia. On the Banking Committee, Chris Dodd will watch the financial markets ...

Will Obama keep his word and meet, without precondition, with the rulers of North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, and Iran in his first year? If he does, will Mahmoud Ahmadinejad make concessions to President Obama? Will Medvedev will take it easy on the new kid?

We won’t see significant offshore drilling under President Obama. What do you think the price of gasoline will be in the summer of 2009?

The Left will score some major victories in the first years of an Obama administration: Card check, ensuring that voices of opposition within unions are quashed. They’ll probably pass some version of the Fairness Doctrine, although many ordinary Americans might wonder why talk radio alone requires the government to step in and set content requirements.

They’ll hike taxes and ... the real trouble comes from a nationalized health-care system. Once created, those programs are nearly impossible to repeal, and the public always buys the argument that they’re underfunded, no matter how poorly they’re managed.

The reality in this, so far beyond horrifying, makes a nightmare into something desireable in comparison.

If Obama wins then say goodbye to gun rights, say goodbye to free speech on the airwaves, and say goodbye to so much more. He won't GET concessions from Iran, Venezuela, Russia and etc. because he'll GIVE concessions to them.

Obama will be Jimmy Carter the Second.

Everyone is already wringing their hands over President Obama.

All I can say is: Don't Panic!

It won't be the end of the world. Remember what happened when Clinton was elected to his first term? Clinton spent his first few months in office enacting laws and pushing agendas to pay off his supporters.

In the next mid-term election, Republicans took control of both the House and the Senate. If Obama makes the same mistake, you can expect the same to happen.

Maybe this time, the Republicans won't screw up the opportunity.

I think you're being optimistic. Who is to say that Obama and Congress wouldn't just cancel the elections? It is generally what happens when people of his ilk get elected.

These kinds of terrifying stories are best saved for campfires.

If is funny you post that, the way things are going here i think that would be good option. I have been thinking about other countries.
This isn’t the country that I grew up with. How sad.
America has lost her identity.

I have to wonder just how much are the people willing to take? Apparently a lot more than Jefferson and Franklin and Washington and friends were willing to take.

It is DIFFERENT this time...We kept our right to bear arms by ONE vote in the Supreme Court. If Obama wins...it is OVER...the democrats will quickly redraw disticts, give voting rights to illegals, and stack the courts..it will be OVER. PERIOD

But first they need to round up the guns. It's a time honored tradition.

The right said the same thing about Clinton.

The left continues to say the same thing about Bush.

I think you (and all the other hand-wringers) should take a deep breath and get a reality check.

The lefties all said the same thing in 2000 when Bush won. Nothing changed in their lives. I will just have to pray a lot if Obama wins. I really hope he doesn't. I just don't think a Democrat is good for the Country right now. I know we will not have a Republican President forever...I am not that naive, but perhaps 2012 or 2016 would be a safer time to survive a Democratic President. Now is not the time.

Truly turning illegal immigrants throughout the U.S. into a voting block forever will put an end to the repeating trend of a Republican Party comeback in ‘10 and beyond, if the Democrats continue to screw things up on all of the issues!

We shall yearn for the halcyon days of Jimmie Carter, when only one of our embassies had been overrun, and there was a brief attempt (unsuccessful, of course) to run an extraction by military means. The motor fuel supplies were only modestly overextended, the gasoline price was only a fraction in adjusted dollars what they shall be by 2010. Housing markets shall have collapsed entirely, even though prices are at quite modest levels, because of the extreme difficulty in locating a lender with sufficient liquidity to make even a 50% loan-to-value mortgage. Gold, if it can be purchased at all, will be $3,000 an ounce, with an annual price increase projected at 125%.

Clinton, as much as I disliked him as President, was never as toxic to this nation as Obama promises to be. Not even close. This time, we really are playing for all the chips.

The way the Left worships Castro and Chavez.. They would make Obama a Dictator for Life.

I guess if Americans are stupid enough to elect this guy then Ben Franklin was right..People get the government they deserve and they can see what real suffering is.
