An elk isn’t 1000 lbs of rancid meat, it’s just about the best eating you can get!

Bear meat isn't 'rancid". It's very rich though. Nice smoked Bear ham and sausage is very tasty in fact. Knowing what to do with the meat is all part of hunting. So is putting that rug on the wall.

It doesn't have to be the biggest bear rug in the world either. It's the one YOU hunted, and the memories that go along with it that are hanging on the wall.

Just because a hunter puts a mount on the wall doesn't mean he's a "trophey hunter". It's utilizing every part of the animal.

" It irks me when people kill bears."

Me too because most people arent careful about getting all of the fat off the carcass and that really ruins the meat...

He said the bear was ‘sly’, not ‘shy’. IAC, being 20 feet away from a house is most certainly not ‘being shy’ or ‘staying away’ for a large predator such as a grizzly bear.

In fact, if you want to try something rancid, try beaver meat.

You may as well eat a poplar tree, except beaver meat is like concentrated poplar tree.

You will eat it if you had to, when you got sick of making moss soup and pine cone tea while lost for days in the bush.

I must say, I’m not exactly thrilled by the idea of meeting a bear in the woods.

If I ever hunt bear, I’m going to want to try some bear burger first to see if I like it.

Right now I’m looking into getting a .22-250 barrel for hunting coyote.

(Small game is a lot easier to hunt from a bicycle)

I agree but hunting from your porch isn’t a good definition for hunting. I have a 5 pt buck every day sitting in my backyard and I would never think about shooting it (also, it is illegal).

Sometimes nature simply needs to be observed and not taken down.

The bear was just being a bear.

And he was just being a top of the food chain, predator numero uno. We have just as much right to be humans as bears have to be bears, and we've been killing bears as long as there have been people. As long s he followed all applicable laws it's all good.

I would prefer Moose. Moose is nature's beef, hands down. I wouldn't turn down anyone offering me elk meat either mind you. It's all good- deer, elk, caribou moose, even bear. I almost never eat beef as long as there still some wild meat in the freezer.

The general rule, especially with those Alaskan grizzlies is- if you can see them, you are too close. That is one bear that fears no man, fears nothing at all.

If you are in it's visual range, and it takes an interest in you, you are in extreme danger. Those things can cover the distance between them and anything in it's visual range in less than a minute.

I've taught in Villages where the half starved village dogs chase grizz between cabins, outta the village. Indians only go on bear shooting sprees when they break into caches, then they shoot every bear around for 2-3 days; then forget about the bear. Like they settled the score between the bear.

In rural Ak, bear are considered pests, shot on sight; second time they come around a house. They have a habit of knocking doors off hinges and coming thru windows to get at the good stuff.

I had a local bear coming into my bait last spring; could see my stand from the house. Wifey said to let him be as he never comes into the yard, just beelines around the edges in the woods. My son bought a new bow and plans on me getting him shooting a grizz on tape nx spring. I always let 10-12 buckets of salmon eggs get to stinking, they work best for drawing everything in.

Ya, bears are dangerous pests, just ask anybody who has been mauled, and then have them take their shirt off, you'll figure it out pretty quick.

That's a little light for anything bigger. Don't try shooting a bear with it. You'll just make it mad. :o) Bear burger is ok as long as it's mixed with some pork or fatty beef and properly prepared.

Bear meat is best for making smoked specialty meat products, like sausages, hams. It would be far too dry just ground up and used for hamburger on it's own. Before you go bear hunting, read up for some bear meat recipes.

Here's a pic of a black bear I hunted this spring.

Photobucket

I've hunted bear off and on for about 20 years. This is only the second I've taken. This was taken with a bow.

I knew I had a monster hitting my bait barrel when he tore the barrel off the tree the first time he hit the barrel. The second time I was sitting in my tree stand, he wouldn't come in till it was dark and i couldn't see my bow sights anymore. I knew he was waiting just out of sight, which in thick bush wasn't very far. He was grunting and clicking his teeth, mad that I was there.

I was really scared getting out of that tree stand that night, I was yelling and talking to him the whole time. Good thing my truck wasn't very far away, I was pretty shakey.

The next morning I went to rebait the barrel, and saw that he had clawed up my tree stand tree real good, a good 7 ft reach.

I got him just at dusk, minutes left of light. Took me another half hour or so to get the nerve to get out of my tree and go find him.

This is probably my last bear hunt. One with muzzleloader and one with bow. Unless I get a chance to go for grizzly before I'm too old.

It's very exciting to hunt bear, even the years you don't get a shot at anything decent. More often than not a female with cubs hits your bait, and that pretty much ruins that bait barrel sight for the season. The males just won't come in with a female with cubs around.

I’d be a more than a little terrified going after a Griz with a bow.
The tree stand would have to be fort knox to get me sitting on it over top a griz. !!

Bears are not cool. We live in PA, about 75 miles from NYC.
Yesterday morning we found a bear had killed one of our sheep during the night. The sheep was inside a field fenced with 4’woven wire topped with two strands of electric fence - - and the fencer was working and the battery powered at the time.

We raise a very rare breed of heritage sheep, have for 25 years. On our road there are at least half a dozen little kids living in houses surrounded by thick woods and swamp.

There are also fragile, elderly folks here that would like to be able to walk from their house to their car without fear. Sooner or later, there is going to be a tragedy.

Actually, even most grizz around here run when they see people, at least where I live cause they get shot at all year long; and they can move out from a dead start faster than you could ever imagine. I guess it's that one outta hundred that thinks you might taste pretty good that you have to worry about. I'd hate to have one running in on me as you'd only have several seconds.

I've had grizz look me over, ponder then figure I was more bother than anything; and walk off. Funny thing is only bear that ever came in on me to eat me were young black bear. The first one I waved and hollared off, with my hair on my neck straight up and the second one I shot at like 15 yards. I know a bunch of guys that have been mauled though, and they shoot every bear they see like they are the devil himself, no joke.

My 17 year old son bought a 2 man stand and we will bait grizz in come nx May with 5 gallon buckets of rotten salmon eggs, as they really work well. I'll be settin nx to him with the camcorder & my S&W 460 mag. With 200 grain hornadys, it puts quarter size holes thru 1/4 inch plate steel.

Bear get in trouble when people have bear food outside around their house. Bear finds it, then figures might be even better eats inside where that man lives, bear gets shot.
