Colin Powells endorsement of Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, has put him at odds with his own son, former Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Michael Powell.
Michael Powell, who served as a policy adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney, is a surrogate for John McCain and represents the GOP nominee on the campaign trail.
He endorsed McCain early in the Republican primary in January, and said the Arizona senator was the best candidate to calm the turbulent economic waters and to steer the new economy in a direction that will bring growth, opportunity and prosperity to all Americans.
Powell contributed $1,000 to McCain the day of the Iowa caucuses and another $1,000 before the Florida primary. In August, he defended McCain, who had said he rarely uses the Internet, as someone who understands technology very well from his time as chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Technology.
Powell was not available Monday for comment.
His father, Colin Powell, has long been a friend of McCains, and in endorsing Obama, the senior Powell broke with the Republican establishment.
Colin Powell supported McCains 2000 presidential campaign, and McCain promised then to name Powell as secretary of State, a position Powell would later hold under President Bush.
But Powell said he was impressed by Obamas steadiness, intellectual curiosity and depth of knowledge. He called McCains running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, unready to become president in case of emergency.
Liberal and conservative commentators alike declared the former secretary of States endorsement a major boost for Sen. Obama (D-Ill.).
The younger Powell, however, who still has much of his career in front of him, has lined up solidly behind McCain. If McCain becomes president he could appoint Powell to several administration positions.

Good for him.
How interesting that the son remains a patriot while the father sold out for another chance to be in D.C. power circles.
Bump Michael Powell — true defender of the free American republic.
It’s common for DC insider families to strategically split their support between the two parties, so that someone can always benefit....
Playing both sides eh?
None of which are even close to be a qualification to be POTUS.
Alzheimers or simple greed are the only two explanations for a military leader endorsing a man with absolutely no military experience to be Commander-In-Chief.
Powell is now a pariah to both sides -- neither one can trust him. He's all done.
I am going to be posting this often for a little while I suppose:
How does it make any since that if Colin Powell is concerned over John McCain’s choice of inexperienced Sarah Palin for VP that he then endorses the LESS experienced Barak Obama for President?
This is the question I wish McCain would ask loudly and often!
How is Palin any less a transformational figure than Obama?
The MSM thoughtfully explained this endorsement for us:
The younger Powell, however, who still has much of his career in front of him, has lined up solidly behind McCain. If McCain becomes president he could appoint Powell to several administration positions.
Isn't that sweet of them?
I’m surprised that Obama didn’t throw (or hasen’t yet thrown) Biden under the bus and insert Colonoscopy Pole as his VP running mate. He’s ‘clean’ and speaks better than Plugs “Chia Pet” Biden.
I’ll be damned. When he ran the FCC I was convinced Michael Powell had been adopted, but now I see he may have the brains in the family!
I knew IT! I had met Michael before at Georgetown. wow. did an awesome job at FCC
Maybe he was given a choice to endorse or be prosecuted after the Inauguration for the War Crimes the Dems want to go after the Bush Administration on.
I guess the black thing skips some generations.
At least there is some intelligence in the family.
I wish that McCain would bring up on the different campaign stops the fact that Michael Powell endorses him! It would balance things out!
You might be right, but I think that Joe the Plumber still has a few days of life left in him! Obama is getting hurt by his answer to Joe. Colon cannot fix this problem.
I love it when a plumber causes leaks!
Doesn’t count he’s an uncle tom.../s
At least the son gets it. Sec. Powell, a man (RINO-ness notwithstanding) was someone I had admiration for, but no more.
