Editorial: Don't throw away your vote by going with McCain or Obama
Charleston City Paper, Charleston, South Carolina ^ | 2008-10-22 | Jack Hunter

I have many Republican friends who are disgusted that I'm voting third party this election year. They believe stopping Barack Obama from becoming president outweighs all else. Meanwhile, I have many Democrat friends who are equally disgusted; for them, seeing John McCain defeated is more important than who wins. They are all wasting their votes.

Imagine a reckless teenager who constantly runs up his parents' credit cards, smashes the family car every Friday night, is failing in school, and has serious drinking and drug problems. Now imagine that no matter how reckless and dangerous that teenager became, his parents believed his behavior was worth tolerating simply because he was "their" kid. No reasonable person would consider this good parenting.

And yet this is exactly how otherwise reasonable people vote.

No matter how bad the Republican or Democrat nominee for president is, the party faithful support their own without fail. The message to politicians? They may lie, ignore their party's platform, and betray every supposed principle, but they will never be held accountable by most voters. Like the reckless teenager, there is simply no reason for them to stop their irresponsible behavior.

The greatest power the people have is their vote, and in supporting the lesser of two evils each election, voters ensure eternal evil.

The PEOPLE chose.

And by "people" we mean all the Democrats and other non-Republicans who voted in the GOP primaries.

And also effectively killing any chance of Sarah Palin doing anything more than going back to Alaska.

The GOP will take it as a sign that she was not the right person and won’t touch her with a ten foot pole.

I’m voting for Sarah because she is just like me.

"Take off the rose colored glasses and see this race for what it is."

Oh, criminy! What a CROCK!

YOU need to wake up and take off YOUR rose-colored glasses.

Maybe then you could see that this next election is between the insiders and the insiders.

And quite frankly, they literally don't care which one wins, because no matter which one wins, they still win!

All this public political posturing is intended to lend credence to the outcome, no more.

And you’re blaming the GOP when you know that the Dems and other non-Rs cheated?

Is that rational?

So we are getting Palin lined up for 2012. If we don't go with this ticket, and Obama gets in, we may not have an election in 2012.

Study the issues! Study the individuals! Once you understand how bad Obama would be for this country, the choice becomes simple. Don't throw the vote away!

Normally, I would agree with this stand. Fortunately, I am not voting for McCain or Obama. I am voting for Sarah.

If Obama wins, he will be opposed in his agenda by the Right and supported in his agenda by the Left.

If McCain wins, he will be opposed in his agenda by the Right and the Left.

The same code of silence the Left applied to the Clintons is in play for Obama. They will speak no ill of him just as the Stalinist Socialists in the US and UK never spoke ill of Uncle Joe Stalin. Some Commie sympathizers held their tongues for 40 years. Doesn’t mean that they didn’t see horrible things being done, they just steadfastly refused to acknowledge them.

GW Bush has such a low approval rating because the Left and Right both disagree with his policies. However, the Left and Right do not disapprove of the same policies.

It is bogus to put out the 23% approval rating (and not diclose Congress’ 9% approval in the same breath).

It would be a better barometer to list issues and show support/disapproval: doing too much to not doing enough.
Oil drilling - Oil conservation
Open borders - Restricted immigration
Open markets - Trade restrictions
Personal liberty to choose health care providers (doctors) and insurance - National medical care
Death Penalty = Oppose / Support
Abortion = Right to Life / Right to Kill
Firearm posession = Right to bear arms / Restricted/registered ownership and use
Taxes = Everyone pays / Some exempted, some pay more, some pay a lot more, some are paid for not paying taxes...
etc.
War in Iraq = Cut and run / Stabilize the region with troop support and training (e.g. the Surge)

Issues like illegal immigration see conservatives thinking not enough is being done and liberals thinking we are being too harsh and that they should be fast tracked to citizenship and voting privileges.

"This year, I will be voting for Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin. "Chuck who?" you ask. Exactly." This year, I will eat lunch at Grover's Sloppy Burger to put McDonalds out of business. "Grover's what?" you ask. Exactly. This year, I will shop at Flybynight Dollar Store to force Wal-Mart to pay attention to me. "Flybynight what?" you ask. Exactly. I'm just trying to create a pattern that is both consistent and equally nonsensical to the quoted text.

If someone doesn't want to support the Chicoms, they will not shop at Wal-mart on principle. Not to bring down the behemoth, but because they feel it is the right thing to do.

Likewise, McDonalds may serve absolute crap. So I will take my business elsewhere. Just because everyone is standing in line waiting on their crap-sandwich doesn't mean I have too.

“Perot gave us the immoral and treasonous Clinton.”

And voting for Bush gave us the NWO open borders mess. The Monica Lewinsky thing was and he deserves to go to jail for that, but President Bush has given our sovereignty away.

"Perot gave us the immoral and treasonous Clinton."

Bull!

If you believe that, then you believe George H.W. Bush gave us Perot.

Actually, Goerge H.W. Bush gave us Clinton.

Perot was just someone who thought he could fill the hole that was left when the Republican Party abandoned conservativism.

Do you know the difference between fantasy and reality? Apparently not. Can you show me an election where a third party candidate won or didn't hurt the party they were most similar to by electing the party they were most against? Let me answer that for you. No you can't.

In the elections I've voted in, Ross Perot voters helped Clinton get elected. Nader's voters always help the republican candidate. In those elections, they might have won their personal ideological battle, but they lost the war. And now, you idiots are going to help 0bama destroy the country. Well done.

Should 0bama win, I am going to have a visceral hatred for you and your party, regardless of your ideals. There is a time and a place for such adolescent idealism, but if expressing it gets you what you and the rest of us least want and are most against, then you are too far beyond stupid to be helped. However, as you pose a threat to the country, I take you very seriously.

And just who do you think the Republican Party is? It is the people.

Remember the primaries? Like it or not, Republican voters (i.e. the Republican Party) choose McCain at the ballot box. Don’t try to make it out to be a situation where some committee, behind closed doors, appointed McCain as the nominee because that is not what happened.

The people got on the congress and this was voted down.

Are you talking about the “New World Order”? Is that what that stands for?

“And I’ll hold McCain accountable for his every move during the next 4 years.”

I’ve found we don’t do a good job of holding our politicians accountable. McCain and his RINOs have voted exactly opposite how we wanted him to vote. The only recourse we have is to vote them out but you’ve taken that ability away from us. We can’t vote out the RINO’s or hold them accountable because so many of you will vote for them no matter what, fearing to “throw your vote away.”

Well don’t blame me I voted for Kodos.

Just to add something to what you said. The 3rd party that blows an election usually suffers quite a bit after that. Look at the Green Party these days. Republicans won’t vote for Green Party candidates, and most Democrats despise the Green Party for “giving” the election to Bush. I can’t imagine the feelings Republicans would have for 3rd parties if they help swing this election to Obama.

"Um, what about the Dem congress for the past four years?"

Was it Bush, or was it someone or something else?

Lessee...who was the leader of our party at that time?

Who was sitting in the White House?

Who was setting foreign policy?

Who was setting domestic policy?

Uhh.. I think his initials start with George W. Bush.
