"Yes We Can . . . Ban Guns"--Obama Announces Gun Ban Agenda Before The Final Vote Count Is In
National Rifle Association ^ | November 07, 2008 | NRA-ILA

Posted on 11/09/2008 2:44:27 AM PST by Perseverando

Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign slogan, "the audacity of hope," should have instead been "the audacity of deceit." After months of telling the American people that he supports the Second Amendment, and only hours after being declared the president-elect, the Obama transition team website announced an agenda taken straight from the anti-gun lobby--four initiatives designed to ban guns and drive law-abiding firearm manufacturers and dealers out of business:

"Making the expired federal assault weapons ban permanent." Perhaps no other firearm issue has been more dishonestly portrayed by gun prohibitionists. Notwithstanding their predictions that the ban's expiration in 2004 would bring about the end of civilization, for the last four years the nation's murder rate has been lower than anytime since the mid-1960s. Studies for Congress, the Congressional Research Service, the National Institute of Justice, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found no evidence that gun prohibition or gun control reduces crime. Guns that were affected by the ban are used in only a tiny fraction of violent crime-about 35 times as many people are murdered without any sort of firearm (knives, bare hands, etc.), as with "assault weapons." Obama says that "assault weapons" are machine guns that "belong on foreign battlefields," but that is a lie; the guns are only semi-automatic, and they are not used by a military force anywhere on the planet.

"Repeal the Tiahrt Amendment." The amendment--endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police--prohibits the release of federal firearm tracing information to anyone other than a law enforcement agency conducting a bona fide criminal investigation. Anti-gun activists oppose the restriction, because it prevents them from obtaining tracing information and using it in frivolous lawsuits against law-abiding firearm manufacturers. Their lawsuits seek to obtain huge financial judgments . . .

We need to start making it clear to our members of Congress especially Democrats that attempts to gut the second amendment will not be tolerated by their constituencies. Our Democrat Representative, Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin actually received an endorsement from the NRA ...let's see that she continues to earn this endorsement.

Has Obama become ashamed of his own agenda so much he won’t share it. The entire set of agenda pages won’t come up for me.

Probably a good idea, I would be ashamed if those were my ideas too.

"You can’t simply declare a law permanent"

That has been the way it works every since the first Bully took over the school yard. Unless good men do something about it that is the way things are going to continue.

This is a nightmare for America. Obama won’t listen to conservatives, but he will listen to the ACLU, who filed an amicus brief on at least one gun case because gun ownership was the cheapest form of self protection. I wish I knew how to find it.

The Google cache of Obamas' anti-gun plan is still available (for now):

cache of "Change.gov"

The pertinent part:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.

Oh, and the original "assault weapons" ban was nothing, compared to the new one:

You have summed up the situation perfectly. While I’m sure President-Elect Obama would love to pass several gun bans, that simply will not happen.

The only reason the democrats have a majority in the house is because they ran a bunch of pro-gun and pro-life candidates in conservative leaning districts. Any move towards a revived assault weapons ban would be political suicide for the “Blue Dog” democrats and simply won’t happen.

While the Obama administration will probably do what it can administratively to harass gun owners, any legislation would get fierce opposition from the Republicans and the Blue Dogs in the Congress. It would go nowhere and cost Obama a lot of his political capital. Obama is many things, but he’s not an idiot and is not going to give the Republicans ammunition for the 2010 mid-term elections. He could lose the Senate and maybe the house over this.

This nation is a pro-gun nation and that is not going to change in the near future.

I wonder what my two thirty round M-1 Carbine mags will be worth on the black market, and my eight twenty round Mini 14 mags. Between 1989 and 1991, those Mini-14 mags each cost about $10. I recently saw a Ruger P85/89 15 round mag for $50; I bought two in 1990 for about $8 each. However, I passed on buying two 30 rd Mini 14 mags for $15 each in 1989.

BTW once you get you CHL, FFL’s no longer have to call in sales to you to the feds.

You just fill in a 4473 ant the POS and they file it there. at the local shop.

They will raid gun shops before they raid private citizens homes.

Of course, if they’re going door to door

Going door-to-door is unlikely. They will hit one place, then another elsewhere in town, then come back later. Resisters will be dealt with violently and possibly WACO'd to provide examples of what happens to those who defy the state and cow all but the most ardent resister into submission.

Searches (they won't take an "I sold it" at face value) will destroy the homes and property of those who do not hand over arms, and anything of value will be looted as well.

Mark my words. This is an illegal and unConstitutional act.
