ATLANTA | Democrat Jim Martin is campaigning feverishly, aided by Barack Obama's grass-roots organization from the presidential race and a flood of support from the national party, but he remains an underdog against incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in a Georgia runoff election considered pivotal for the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
Mr. Martin is behind in polls, has half the cash of his opponent and early-voting turnout among black voters is stagnating - a crucial block for any Democrat in this mostly conservative state where Republicans also hold the other U.S. Senate seat, the governor's office and majorities in both houses of the state General Assembly.
That doesn't bode well for Mr. Martin and Senate Democrats eyeing an unexpected victory Tuesday to put them one vote away from a filibuster-breaking 60-vote majority and the power to ram the party's agenda through the chamber.

I would think a runoff would favor Chambliss as there would no Obamamania to drive the Dem vote.
Well, you know that my district is pretty much a neighborhood-by-neighborhood mix of GOP and Dems. I guess they figure the whole county is up for grabs. :)

In some areas it’s not so much that Martin ran well, it’s that the Libertarian candidate ran better than usual. In Gwinnett County, one of the big suburban counties outside Atlanta, Saxby got 53%, Martin 43%, Buckley 4%. In Cobb County, another big suburban county, it was pretty much the same, with Martin just one point lower. In many northern GA counties, Saxby scored in the 60-70% range, Martin 20%-30%, and Buckley anywhere from the low to high single digits. Martin’s vote actually doesn’t look much different from Max Cleland’s losing 46% six years ago, it’s just that Saxby’s seeing a cut from his column due to Buckley, plus the extra black turnout has dampened the GOP margins in the Atlanta metro area.
Saxby may be in good shape even if he only picks up a small portion of the Buckley vote.
If Georgia is similar to other states, retirement benefits must be reduced substantially. Pension portfolios have lost 30% to 50% of value in one year. The ridiculous target rate of return is far short of the actual rate of return. Government workers, especially teachers feel entitled to subsidized early retired. Subsidized early retirement cannot be afforded now. It seems like a sensible reform to me unless teacher pensions are much different in Georgia than other states.
If the LP candidate doesn’t endorse Saxby Chambliss publicly, then he is a total jerk and a danger to freedom and we need to swear to never support or vote LP again.
I am sick and tired of the LP handing victory after victory over to the liberal socialist Democrats.

Alas, we never know about GA which gave the world her own GA Jimmy.
Newt or Mike Huckabee would do Chambliss more good than Giuliani in Georgia.
