ALBERT LEA, Minn. (AP) - Two teenage girls who worked at a nursing home have been charged with abuse, accused of taunting, spitting on and groping residents who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. According to the criminal complaint, filed Monday, 19-year-old Brianna Broitzman and 18-year-old Ashton Larson laughed earlier this year as they spat in residents' mouths, poked and groped their breasts and genitals, and at times mocked them until they screamed.

They’re both slouches. Get back to me in twenty-five years on that. Who you really are shows after that short length of time. They both will learn that time flies soon enough, as they may already suspect and fear. - I suppose that perfect fear casts out love just as the opposite is true.
It's the parents that are true culprits. Whenever we see cruelty and mass murder committed by young people, one queston is never asked: who are the parents?
This may be why they don’t allow residents to possess a handgun.
What a nightmare for those patients. I imagine it’s bad enough in the best of circumstances.
Good for your family. Not all residents are treated badly. The help know who they can treat badly, and “get away” with it. They have compassion for those who are dying, but treat Alzheimer’s residents differently, thinking the residents, “know better”, and are faking some of their illness. No one with Alzheimer’s is a fake. It’s devastating to see once beautiful, smart people become like children or worse. Some linger for dozens of years in a zombie like state. Those are the ones most susceptible to idiots.

You are correct. It is harder on the families. I worked with Alzheimer's residents for a few years, and watched the families suffer. When the neurologist diagnosed my husband, and said the word, "Alzheimer's", he didn't even flinch. A few days ago, I asked him if he was happy. His reply, "Why shouldn't I be?"
Gee I wonder why his sweet innocent little a-hole is the way she is, daddy don’t get it either.
I wonder when he will start laying awake at nights wondering what his old age will be like, oh wait his little sweetheart will take good care of him.
Not to excuse them of their actions, but I can understand it breeding resentment. There are acceptable ways to handle that, rather than abuse innocent third parties, especially vulnerable ones.
One thing that sticks in my mind more than any other memory in 20+ years of acute-care hospital work, was having to turn in an RN...and one I had rather liked as a person until then...for patient abuse. And for ordering me to slap a senile patient from a nursing home, "because that's all those people understand".
Six bed ward, and it was so upsetting that a patient in the next bed coded during her diatribe to me for refusing her order.
Fortunately, my night Charge Nurse investigated, and forwarded a report to the unit's Head Nurse, who also investigated.
The RN was fired.
The patient who coded didn't make it.
The patient I was ordered to slap was eventually transferred back to a nursing home.
There is NO excuse for abuse.

I know a young nurses aide that took TOO MUCH TIME with my Dad in his what turned out to be his last days...she got in trouble for it believe it or not....
Lemme tell you , FRiend, that aides in nursing homes only have to a) have a relatively clean criminal record, b) pass a drug test, c) be certified or willing to get certified, and d) to work very hard for VERY low wages.
All the “screening” in to world would not have stopped this. However, you are correct: the home should have caught this a long time ago.
The nursing home industry is a disgrace.
Yes, it is all a “numbers” game. Too little staff, too little time per patient.
Yep, that happens all the time. The nursing homes seem to be short of help, but won’t hire. They stick with the state minimums on everything. The ones who do show up for work, and actually care, are over-worked, which sometimes make them short with the residents. I’ve seen nurses’ aids fret over the poor quality time they gave to specific residents. Their standards need to be raised across the board. We wouldn’t allow this crap for our children, so why do our parents get treated so badly?
