Think tank: If each of us carried a gun . . .
Times Online (London, UK) ^ | December 8, 2008 | Richard Munday

The firearms massacres that have periodically caused shock and horror around the world have been dwarfed by the Mumbai shootings, in which a handful of gunmen left some 500 people killed or wounded.

For anybody who still believed in it, the Mumbai shootings exposed the myth of “gun control”. India had some of the strictest firearms laws in the world, going back to the Indian Arms Act of 1878, by which Britain had sought to prevent a recurrence of the Indian Mutiny.

Yes, as long as it's 'everybody trained to carry a gun. Would you want to be sitting next to somebody like that jerk in NY who shot himself in the leg?

Well cops should certainly get some training.

A free people ALWAYS had the right to arms.

SLAVES never did - regardless of the “format” of their servitude.

It sounds almost like you are equating our modern welfare state - which traps poor people in the urban ghettos of cities with reactionary gun control laws and make them Wards Of The State - to slavery.

Yep.

I checked out your homepage, and seeing some of the names listed there made me a little sad.

I know, it made me sad to have to put some of them on there. :(

And, unfortunately, it’s just a starter list. :/

That’s one of the points I made to my son’s friends: Ever hear of a massacre at a gun show?

Which also blows another lib theory out of the water: If the problem is guns and/or access to guns, you should be reading “Ho-hum, Yet Another Massacre at a Gun Show” in the paper every day.

Why do most mass shootings happen in ‘Gun-Free’ zones?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I have often wondered about that! Saturday my wife and I were with a group of over twenty people taking the training course for a South Carolina concealed weapons permit. As part of the requirements we all went out to a small firing range and fired thirty rounds each to show that we were capable of hitting what we aimed at. As we took turns firing in groups of five I wondered just why some nutcase has never taken the opportunity to come to one of these training sessions and gun down a few helpless victims. Gosh, I just can’t figure it out.
The other thing I can’ figure out is why those people who think we are safer without guns don’t put up a sign in front of their own homes saying that there are no guns allowed on the premises.

The Mumbai massacre could happen in London tomorrow; but probably it could not have happened to Londoners 100 years ago.

In January 1909 two such anarchists, lately come from an attempt to blow up the president of France, tried to commit a robbery in north London, armed with automatic pistols. Edwardian Londoners, however, shot back – and the anarchists were pursued through the streets by a spontaneous hue-and-cry. The police, who could not find the key to their own gun cupboard, borrowed at least four pistols from passers-by, while other citizens armed with revolvers and shotguns preferred to use their weapons themselves to bring the assailants down.

OMG - the Brits are "getting it". It's about damn time...

Whoa - great comment. Or better yet, we could publish the names and addresses of people for gun control.

Let the crooks "figure" out what to do with the information... ( My guess is that like "Rosie" and the other Hollywood BIGS, these people have very expensive security systems and are not concerned about the consequences of their anti-gun beliefs on citizens not able to spend hundred's of thousands on similar systems.)

Would you want to be sitting next to somebody like that jerk in NY who shot himself in the leg?

Over time, what would happen is Dad or Mom will teach their children how to handle a gun. They will learn respect for it and they will know how to use it.

I have been shooting since I was five. I have never done anything wrong. I have been plenty mad at people, but I have never used it in offense. I have learned to use it for defensive purposes only and offensively to put food on the table. Not saying all people will go by that, but I will bet they will think twice about doing something stupid, because they know somebody else has a gun.

Yes, people will chamber rounds and will accidentally shoot themselves or others; but they will learn and overall it may mean less people dead. Add up the victims of crimes and the bombings as mentioned in this thread, and my bet is it will be more people dead.

An armed society is a polite society.

The Times is a great newspaper. They had a hilarious satire about Obama back in August, probably posted here somewhere.

If every American were armed, that would be three hundred million cops on the streets. Of course, a few million of them would be Chicago cops.

“Why do most mass shootings happen in ‘Gun-Free’ zones?”

Because the killers do not want their targets shooting back at them.

We have NIMBies who move in next door to a firing range, then get them shut down because of noise or environmental lead.

Heresy. Oh, how I truly wish I could have a firearms range in my backyard...
