I often wonder how liberals can stand watching 24, given how often and how effectively it challenges so many liberal premises. But then I recall how often the liberal squishyness of Law & Order annoys me, yet I never miss an episode. I guess if a show entertains you enough, or perhaps challenges your preconceptions effectively enough, most of us will put up with it.
But irritate liberals it has.
After the show was criticized - by the U.S. Army, no less - for its depiction of heroic CTU agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) torturing bad guys as a means to an end (saving the day), the series now sits Bauer before a Senate hearing about his actions.
Last night's season premiere promised that it will continue to do so. Predictably after watching tonight's premiere, lib reporterette Alessandra Stanley of the New Yor Times, finds her panties in a bunch...

“how macho was the show before?”
...gonna need a hacksaw...
You got it right. DOOMED!
Plot spoiling IS covered under treason.
The little dweeb computer character? I thought that was her, but I figured one of the queens of EXTREME liberalism wouldn't be caught dead on such a show. She must need the $$$.
On a slightly different topic, did anybody catch last night's episode of THE UNIT? I used to love that show! Last night was an abortion. I think they've fired their military consultants. The really sad thing is that it seems the network is trying to kill this show, probably under pressure from CAIR. Most of the best episodes deal with islamic extremism. They want (I think) to replace THE UNIT with a new series titled FLASHPOINT. Standard cop show with politically correct females in a SWAT TEAM. I've seen a few episodes. So far none deal with terrorists. A few go on about "home grown" terrorism. Typical: Blame Americans. The new show is a DOG, with fleas IMHO. Make you mad? Tell cbs how you feel!
Wouldn't you rather see Chloe do that?
>> 1....the rebirth of Tony. That usually means running out of new ideas.
There are dozens of people (even popular characters) that have died on this show, and stayed dead ... Michelle Dessler, Terri Bauer, Nina Meyers, David Palmer, Sherry Palmer, George Mason, Ryan Chappelle, Milo Pressman, Curtis Manning, Edgar Stiles ... and on, and on ... the show is a bloodbath. It isn’t as if they’re bringing someone back from the dead every few weeks, or every popular character back.
I like that they brought him back as a villain ... its a cool twist on the standard “he’s alive!” show. They haven’t fully explained Tony’s death and return. I’ll wait for the full explanation before judging whether it was well done.
>> 2....domestic terrorists. Why not have a good old fashioned Islamic terrorist organization? Fear?? yes
Honestly — its because Islamic terrorists have been done to death. They wanted something new, something fresh — not the same old Islamic plot stuff.
>> Oh, and Jeanine Garafalo.. what a terrible casting (unless shes a turncoat)
Yeah ... I could’ve done without her. But, she wasn’t horrible. She seems like a Chloe knock-off ... a weird, slightly cranky, slightly annoying, analyst.
I actually did watch about 20 minutes(off and on)and came to the conclusion that it was either a made for Lifetime series or a lame attempt at a made-for-TV Die Hard(movie).
Janeane Garbarfalot???? Please....
Jack may be nimble and may be quick, but in this PC era he will sooner or later lose his.....
...well, "masculinity".
The person who was responsible for blindfolding and tying the hands of American intelligence, has a lot of nerve complaining about anything. But at least she played herself being"un-employed", as she stated.
Garofalo conceded she was initially very reticent to do it, because I heard about the right-wing nature of Joel's [24 co-creator Joel Surnow] politics and the torture-heavy scripts. But, she quipped: And then I thought, 'I'm unemployed!'" So much for standing up for principle.
Tony on the other hand was liked and a good character in the earlier shows. It is interesting to show a complete change of character ... he and Jack being good friends and agents together.
Jack stays true to himself, no matter he difficulties he suffers.
My Question - when will we see Jack’s dad show up again?
I have a feeling that Tony is working with Jack against the Africans. If you notice, he verbally threatens the kidnapped guy with no physical harm and he prevented the planes collision.
They will find a way to make him a good guy again and may bring his wife back from the dead!
wow, she’s got a lot of ink on those arms... what a pig.
Too bad the subpoena arrived when it did. He was close!
This is 24. Targets are needed.
I'd set up a Dead Pool on her character. I predict that she'll be done by hour 14.
My husband asked the same question. I'm pretty sure that the credits listed her as a special guest star. I think that means that she doesn't have a long future on the show.
If it was Star Trek, she'd be wearing the red shirt.
She might have considered taking a shower more than once a week as well.
On the other hand, maybe her character is supposed to be repulsive.
Terrific!
"Bummer of a Birthmark, Jeanine" (Obscure FarSide reference....)
Yep, I was surprised there’s an African component. In most movies/series, it’s always an evil white guy behind it all ... often German. Of course, it’s still early, so it may still end up that way. In any case, I’m enjoying the show so far. The congressional hearing was good.
