New Englanders, Up State NY ‘n Upper Mid Westerners Needn’t Comment: Olney,MD 1-31-9 Op Inf FReep
Feb. 03,2009

Posted on 02/03/2009 6:22:39 PM PST by trooprally

Okay, all you FReepers in New England, Up State New York and Upper Mid West Needn’t Comment. We know it gets colder than a witch’s teet in January up there, but we in D.C. got spoiled after last winter. Coldest it got for the Walter Reed or Olney FReep was high 20s.

Did I mention yet that the moonbats were a no show? Not yet, but they didn’t show.

This year has been cold. But not as cold as 2007. Who can forget the night at Walter Reed when the former Fran O’Brien’s dinner buses, filled with wounded warriors and their families, stopped at Lurker Bill’s corner? We were invited onto the buses and they cheered and clapped for us!! I personally still get a warm ‘n fuzzy feeling about that night. Check it out here: Walter Reed FReep #96 - The Bus Stops Here

Olney was almost identical to that night so far as the cold and ice. We had a wimpy snow fall mid week, then some rain the next day, and then temps barely got above freezing during the day, re-freezing at night. Two years ago at Walter Reed (Same night that the bus stopped - link above) there was about 2 inches of frozen rain soaked snow. We had to use a pick to clear our corners and some salt for good measure. In Olney last Saturday, while the sidewalk was 90% clear, the grassy knoll behind us was frozen solid with rain soaked snow. Just an inch, but just a slick as a skating rink.

And who can forget the first Gathering of Eagles that March 17,2007? Jim Rob, Syncro and many others had come into town for GoE I and came by. At Walter Reed that night we had freezing rain and snow. The next day temps were in the mid 30s with a 20-30 MPH wind and the Mall was a muddy mess. But we over came this and trounced the anarchists.

How cold was it this past Saturday? Only in the mid 20s with a brisk wind. Freeper Eager made it out again this week. Two weeks ago when the temp was 15 degrees he also made it out. Jeez, good thing for our cold weather FReepers Eager and iMacMan. Especially iMacMan since he takes the pictures.

We had 7 Legionnaires, lurkers and FReepers. They were Legionnaires Glenn (USMC - WWII), Halsey (USMC - Korea) Lurker Bill and FReepers Cindy_True_Supporter, Eager, iMacMan and myself.

All pics are by iMacMan.

Did I mention yet that the moonbats were a no show? Nope, not yet, oops, Yes I did. I must still have a case of brain freeze.

BELOW LEFT: Blue banner with frozen snow in back ground. The hill was so slick that we couldn’t put up the red banner or the small American flags. BELOW RIGHT: Lurker Bill putting up the other blue banner. He was smart, he attached ice cleats to his boots.

BELOW LEFT: Lurker Bill had to drive the rebar into the frozen ground since the ice made it impossible to find the old holes. BELOW RIGHT: And the blue banner is up.

BELOW LEFT: Me holding down the corner while Lurker Bill set up and before the others made it out. You can tell when it is really cold when I wear my knit hat instead of my Marine cap. BELOW RIGHT: Our “ice” stalwart, Eager.

BELOW LEFT: Lurker Bill and Halsey. BELOW RIGHT: Cindy_True_Supporter.

BELOW: The moonbat corner. Must have been a slow day posting the pics. iMacMan had some fun with these.

BELOW: Without the moonbats on their corner, iMacMan had time on his hands. Just a couple of friendly passerbys.

But iMacMan did get some good shots of the passing drivers. He didn’t get the two that were on their cell phone and waved to us with the other hand. Though he couldn’t figure out who was steering. The postal workers usually give us a wave. Even the oh-so-correct National Weather Service guy waved. He better have waved or we would have thrown icicles at him.

WARNING TO FREEPERS ATTENDING OLNEY

Some new money making SPEED CAMERAS have been installed on north bound Georgia Avenue right before you enter the main business district. Slow your speed after the light at King William Drive.

And a new one has been placed just south of Brookeville, between Brookeville and the Longwood Community Center.

REMEMBER
Next Saturday, same place, Georgia Avenue, MD Rte. 97 and MD Rte. 108 in Olney
NEW TIME - 10:15 AM to 11:45 AM

As always, the D.C. Chapter's rules for protesting will be in effect. Briefly, they are: No violence, no profanity, no racism, no provocations, obey the law and treat all law enforcement officers with respect.

But a lot of verbal engagement in Olney is always welcome.

Thank you for the encouraging reminder. The days start getting warmer from here on out. Forecast for this Saturday is at least 40, but above freezing for the FReep.

>>>We know it gets colder than a witch’s teet in January up there<<<

Well... the brass monkey froze his ears off last night. After the last cold snap, ears was all he had left to freeze off. :)

Now that is cold.

I know a president who’s ears are burning after Daschle’s and Geithner’s withdrawal. Maybe he can bring some welcome warmer to Iowa.

Good work. I really do appreciate anyone who works a freep or PGR mission in freezing weather. You know you are cold when you get in your car to leave and you can’t feel your seat.

Hopefully I’ll be able to make at least one of those dates.

I'll second that feeling. For the past several years we've been putting a block in front of the radiator on [Mrs] T's car. It warms up quicker after the cold freeps. T

Thank you for the kudos. Stay warm.

It’s been a while since you’ve come south, don’t be a stranger.

Also hoping you make one of the dates. The April and May dates are probably more important in the big picture, and warmer. But as Disco Dave said in Post 11, counter rallies are more in-your-face with the moonbats, if one is so inclined.

Damn, you are up late.

Depends on your definition of fun, DD.
You need to come out, because we're gonna rock the house in April, if I can pull it off.
March 21 will be a security detail for most of us in GoE, making sure the moonbats don't get creative around the Monuments.

7 degrees - Most definitely cold.

My apologies re “Upstate”, guess I was to young to realize the difference when I lived up there, or now. :-))

My parents are from Albany and Utica, and I have a nephew in the Buffalo burbs. I was surprised to see all the vineyards last time we were up there visiting him.
