GLENN: Can anybody see that this stuff doesn't work? I mean, do we need to look past California? Can we stop and just look at California for a second? The entire state is near a shutdown. Lawmakers now can't come to an agreement on how to patch the gigantic hole in the budget. They are one short, one vote short to pass the budget. The state is poised to start laying off as many as 20,000 government workers. So you have some concept, the hole is so big, if they fired all employees, all state employees, they would only have half of what they need. If they shut down all prisons, that's only an extra 25%. They would still be 25% short.
But what I don't understand is how come California doesn't use Obamanomics? I mean, I really don't understand how come California just doesn't spend more. If they would just spend more, they could create more jobs.

Well, there are some cuts in the budget, $15 billion worth, not insignificant. If you haven't believed me before when I say this is a crisis that is growing out of control, what else do you think would get Californians to cut their budget by $15 billion?

I just saw this thread, and you beat me to the reply! I heard Glenn Beck say this on his show today, and I wanted to scream. I’ve been pointing out the Tax Foundation numbers on Alaska for a long time now. Glad someone else caught it, too.
Maybe Alaska, that greedy oil-rich Alaska should bail California out. Well, they are. Alaskans are sending their money to Washington and Washington is sending it to California!
He's wrong. Just the opposite has been happening for decades. States like CA have been sending more money to Washington than they receive in return, while Alaska sends less than it receives. So, for decades, states like CA have been sending money to Washington, and Washington has been sending it to Alaska (not the other way around).
California politicians are to blame for putting the state in its current situation. But Alaska was never the independent state everyone seems to believe.
Edison wasn’t the guy you think he was...he actually “invented” very little. His genius was in perfecting the inventions of others. This is nothing to sneeze at, but it isn’t pure science, not even pure technological design.
The agencies you named aren’t in the science business.
And, too, I’m not saying that gubmint is the only entity that can or should do R&D. I am saying, that they have made contributions.
To be honest, I don’t begrudge these states, like Alaska, the federal money. Not only are we all Americans, but to not give them the money would be a hugely disruptive thing. You’d have even depopulation problems in these debtor states. In Kansas, for instance, they’re giving away land to people who want to live there and can prove they can make a living. Imagine that multiplied by a thousand.

I’d be curious to see those numbers without military spending.
Libs always trot out those figures because many conservative-leaning states have lots of military bases. They don’t talk about HI, which, like AK, is a small (population) state with a large military component that skews the numbers.
If Alaska declares independence, it will be annexed by RUssia.
It’s a hornets’ nest to start factoring in military numbers. You have to assume that the vast majority of those bases are of importance, just as you need to assume that a transportation infrastructure of roads is of importance.
Do you really want to get into a discussion of what military expenditures are justified and which are not? It’s not a road I’d like to go down.

That’s a pretty specious argument. You could say the same about any Federal dollars.
Uh, yeah — that was my point. Money is fungible. It doesn’t matter if the cash that goes into a system comes from military payroll or welfare checks or the private sector.
However, you could make the argument and say, I don’t mind paying military salaries, but I dislike paying welfare folks to sit around and do nothing. That road leads you down a bad path to — I don’t mind building prisons, but hate building schools, etc. etc. etc.

I heard one of the panel who vetoed it say that drilling would dissuade going for the green or some such.
I hate that CA does the stupidest crap in the world and now wants us to bail them out so they can do more. They are freaking incredible.
