Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown
The London Telegraph ^ | March 7, 2009 | Tim Shipman

Posted on 03/07/2009 12:16:38 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.

Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.

British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.

But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.

Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.

A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".

A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

>“He’ll be replaced by summer.”

Hmmm....interesting statement.<

>Holy carp, even if it was true - and the cure is to stop jetting across the country for every 25 jobs “created”<

I just thought of something.

If anything happens to him, it will probably be a plane crash.

Does he even park those things long enough for maintenance?

Are you in WA state now? I lived in Seattle for 5 yrs while in grad school. Being an east coast girl, it always freaked me out when the weather/news people announced that the pass was closed. It just sounded like we were so isolated from the rest of the world. (and yes, I know we have airplanes now...)

Is it still cold out that way? I do miss the PNW; it is the most beautiful place I’ve ever lived in.

They’ll just get some more Clinton retreads to handle the day to day work.

Get a grip, O Disturbed One. You chose to start this bullshit by responding to something that I said to someone else. Now you advise me to stop posting to you and get off the thread? Go pound sand, you freak.

Did they send the Churchill bust back or did they put it in a closet?

If he didn't like it he should have quietly put it in storage. But no, he gave it back to the Brits and it hit the press. The Brits were rightly tweaked about it too.

I have spent cumulative MANY minutes today laughing at this and have shown some people. Somehow this photo - kind of a non sequitur - is just hilarious.

Wow not even a full 60 days in office and he is tired. Or at least he is using it as an excuse for his cock-ups.

I wonder how he would have fared if 9-11 happened on his watch. (Thank God it didn't!)

"Let's see, aside from the fact that they're our allies, perhaps the fact that they have boomers sets them apart from the other 190 countries..."

Not only are they an ally but they are THE ALLY.

Since WW I we have been joined at the hip. If Britain Sneezes the U.S catches a cold and vice versa.

Dear God, how did this bunch worm their way into the Presidency. Its like all the Bad Traits of FDR, Clinton, Carter, and LBJ rolled into one with no redeeming qualities whatsoever on the other side of the ledger.

Our "discussion" was over some time ago. Have a good evening.

Yes, but you don't go! (Gilbert and Sullivan tend to have a suitable quotation for everything.

OMG. From the article:

“The real views of many in Obama administration were laid bare by a State Department official involved in planning the Brown visit, who reacted with fury when questioned by The Sunday Telegraph about why the event was so low-key.

The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: ‘There’s nothing special about Britain. You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.’”

If they can so badly botch the visit of a PM, what else are they botching?

Don't look to the Propaganda Ministry (a.k.a., the MSM) for details on that issue.

yeah, The Queen should follow the Pope's example :-)

If bama is so tired, why doesn't he take the 'day' off and come back to work a half day on 1/20/13? I'm sure we'll manage well without out him and his crew.

oh dear, are you implying that barack was too tired to even sing Kumbaya with Mr Brown? (or does he need a teleprompter for that also?)

Obama is lazy and stupid. Big surprise!

I guess he found out the President’s job is more than giving ‘nice’ speeches. And since community organzing isn’t exactly running anything he is unqualified to be President like so many have said for months!

“Obama is overwhelmed. There is a zero sum tension between his ability to attend to the economic issues and his ability to be a proactive sculptor of the national security agenda.

“That was the gamble these guys made at the front end of this presidency and I think they’re finding it a hard thing to do everything.”

The Sunday Telegraph understands that one of Mr Obama’s most prominent African American backers, whose endorsement he spent two years cultivating, has told friends that he detects a weakness in Mr Obama’s character.
