Receptionist a 'hero' at NY center where 14 killed
AP ^ | 04-04-2009 | WILLIAM KATES

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The two receptionists at the American Civic Association community center barely had time to react when a gunman stormed in the front door and shot them at close range before firing on a roomful of immigrants taking a citizenship class.

One receptionist survived, playing dead, before crawling under a desk and calling 911.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said she stayed on the phone for 90 minutes, "feeding us information constantly," despite a serious wound in the abdomen.

Binghamton is a nothing little city. Nothing personal against it, but it just does not qualify as a big city. Not the type you’d expect to be hit by a terrorist attack. There’s nothing there....

I’m so so sorry she had to endure this horror...poor thing.
Wish I could give her a hug, or warm handshake, and tell her how special I think she is :-)

90 minutes talking to the cops, laying there reporting to the police while the killer did his stuff as the cops stood outside.

I noticed that as well. Ninety minutes is a long time.

No doubt it was a gun free zone so nobody was able to be armed.

Of course, a lady who said she was the guy’s sister said he couldn’t have done it because he didn’t have a gun. Like I’m sure he would tell her what his plans were.

You can’t even get concealed carry in many counties in NYS any more, unless you are a security guard or have very extenuating circumstances. Forget it for the average citizen.

Funny thing, that — the exact same thought went thru my mind when I was reading this. 90 minutes is an eternity: more than long enough for somebody to bleed out with no chance of recovery.

The police did a similar thing here in New Zealand a few months ago, hiding under cover for 45 minutes while a victim bled out, just in case the shooter was still around. Members of the public even tried to save the guy, and still the cops wouldn’t let the ambulance attend.

There’s gotta be something wrong with that methodology. Sure, it might not be ideal to have the cops come into these situations with guns blazing, but...

(actually, on the surface, that seems like a fine idea to me. But then, I’m not an expert, just a civilian).

Unfortunately, I don’t think convenience has anything to do with it. I believe somewhere in their sick minds, they want to commit this act, then justify it or make it a right act in their minds by convincing themselves that they will be the torch that the anti-gunners bear.

I have witnessed cops doing this sort of thing, on a tiny scale (a knife fight in a bar not a mass murder).

As a customer I jumped in and took a knife away from a man in a fight, I pressured the bar maid to call the police (against her will)and then when they showed up I kept playing pool and watched as it took them 15 to 20 minutes to sneak up to the bar in broad daylight.

Knowing that the call involved a man with a knife in a bar, I was stunned to see the indifference that the police had to any innocent lives at risk inside the bar (So. Cal with open doors), their only concern seemed to be institutional type safety for themselves, rescues were not on their agenda.

There has to be a balance between a man that can show up to work everyday and fill out forms and also be a warrior if it should ever be needed during a 30 year career, but stories like this make it seem that we have drifted too far towards having weak policeman.

I hear ya. I am so glad Mo. has CCW. I even carry while attending church. Only place I don't is government places where I have to go through a metal detector to gain entrance. I don't know if they had something like that installed at the American Civic Association community center there or not. Haven't checked Mo. for ACACCs but being an immigration service center, I would definitely carried if I were going into one of them here. To bad the stats aren't put out over ALL media that definitely shows off limit gun areas have a much larger crime number than ones that allow conceal carry.

I agree.

The Texas Rangers did not get their reputation for toughness by playing hop-scotch. And Wyatt Earp did not clean up at the OK Corral by handing out trespass notices. Somehow I think if these guys were involved in the NY Immigration Center shooting things may have been done differently.

Before I posted that I went looking for some video of a court house in (I think) Texas where shots were fired outside and all the law enforcement guys went running towards the gunfire.

Since I am sometimes critical of them I was hoping to post that video because it makes magnificently clear that this is something that at least many of the rank and file cops want to fix.

It is a great piece of film and I hope that someone posts a link.

“Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said she stayed on the phone for 90 minutes, “feeding us information constantly,”

90 minutes the cops sat outside. And the gunman wasn’t shooting at them.

If cops like these are enlisted to round up guns, it will take them about a year to round up 25 guns, and by the time they get to house No. 24, only one cop will be left and he’ll be eating doughnuts at dispatch, answering calls about kittens stuck in trees.

This action by these cops mimics what happened at the LA riots and Columbine. If the action gets rough, cops in liberal cities will either hide or go home. This is good information to file away. I suspect a good number of them will refuse orders to bang on doors and demand tribute to king obuma. I know a few who will ally with the citizens against the DC fascist criminals.

Next time you see a cop, thank him for doing a good job in a tough situation. It’s all part of the psychological warfare we need to do to turn cops away from their Marxist masters in the big cities. So all you people who think not enough is being done, do that. Bake a bunch of cookies for the cops at the station and drop them off.

Interesting times, indeed.

I don’t know if it is on youtube but I have video tape (from the TV) that shows the cops fleeing ground zero as the first automobile was attacked by the mob as a news helicopter filmed the scene.

The police car drove AROUND the car that was under attack in the middle of the street while a news helicopter watched from above.

Seems like there has to be a happy medium between the No-Knock Entries and the Hide-Until-Bad-Guy-Goes-Away. Maybe we’re asking too much of ordinary mortals? I dunno. I’d be happy to have Police salaries doubled if they could get the happy medium right: Sheepdogs ought not be underpaid, in fact they should be paid a premium for doing properly a dangerous and thankless task such as policing. Firemen too. Soldiers too. Ambulance and Nurses too.

You know, I’m sure footage like that aired here in NZ a while back. I’m going to check the TVNZ archives, see if it is there. Back shortly...

Anyone else struck by the difference in the police response in Carthage NC on Sunday? In a small town in the south, the hero is a lone officer who immediately enters the nursing home and takes the killer out. In mid-size city in NY, the hero is the receptionist who describes to the police what’s going on for 90 minutes while they wait outside. There’s no report of negotiations going on during this time.

It’s a great saying, and very true. The cops that I know would readily admit that. It’s one really good reason for everybody to be capable of defending themselves at least to some extent. I really envy you Yanks having the right to keep and bear arms in self-defense: we do not have that right here in NZ, and that’s silly. We aren’t even allowed to use anything other than “reasonable” force — which the courts usually interpret to mean “minimum force”. Naturally, the Bad Men really appreciate that!

Just this past week, a Sikh store owner was acquitted for assaulting two teenagers with a grasshockey stick. They had just robbed his corner store and stabbed him. Yet the cops saw fit to press charges against this store owner!

Un-be-frigging-lieveable. It is stuff like this that makes me shake my head in disgust.

Shortly after Columbine many departments changed their policy - have the first officers on the scene immediately enter to give aid and do a recon. Don’t wait for SWAT to gear up and assemble.
Obviously this department didn’t change.

Your post made me realize this is 2009.

Remember New York 9/11, 2001?

Remember Beslan? Ultimately, at least 334 hostages were killed, including 186 children. Hundreds more were wounded or reported missing.

Remember the DC snipers?

This is 2009 are we really ready for the terrorists?

I don't know enough of what went on in this case, but in general, you are correct. American History (the real, pre-PC stuff) is replete with people who got good and pissed off when someone tried to kill them (and/or others) rather than freeze or be led to slaughter. They might have ended up with lots of holes, cuts and breaks, but they got the job done or died trying.
