Rabbi to pope: Go split Rome

JERUSALEM – If Pope Benedict XVI so fervently supports a Palestinian state – which would split sections of Israel – he also should divide Rome, charged the leader of a coalition of more than 350 Israeli rabbinic leaders and pulpit rabbis.

"I was shocked to hear that the first thing the pope had to say when he landed in Israel was that the Holy Land must be divided to make room for a Palestinian state," said Joseph Gerlitzky, rabbi of central Tel Aviv and chairman of the Rabbinical Congress for Peace, which includes some of Israel's most prominent Jewish leaders.

"I suggest that he divide Rome. The Holy Land was promised to the Jewish people and absolutely no human being on this earth has a right to relinquish even one inch of this land," Gerlitzky stated.

“Are you claiming that the artifacts were illegally obtained?”

Yes. Of course technically the Inquisition, Rome’s conquest of Jerusalem, the Crusades, and various and sundry state approved pogroms over centuries may have given the Pope colorable title but not moral title. Is he a legal leader or a moral one?

And I guess the Pope can shelter under diplomatic immunity.

The Jerusalem Magistrates’ Court denied on Monday a bid by Land-of-Israel activists Baruch Marzel and Itamar Ben-Gvir to obtain an order to delay the departure of Pope Benedict XVI and his party at the end of his visit to Israel. The activists had sought the order in connection with books and Temple items believed to be held in the Vatican.

The court ruled that the pope has diplomatic immunity, as do the people around him.

“Are you saying that possession of land and objects of value acquired by Israel by force are legitimate, but the historical activities of non-Jews isn’t? Are you saying that the many shops that openly and legally sell Judaica can’t really transfer title? Sounds to me like you are in favor of another reparations scam.”

The difference is that Israel fought defensive wars giving them both legal AND moral title.

“Reparations.” No. We don’t sell our heritage and our religion. These are priceless items of religious significance to Jews. We want these sacred items back. Due to the supersessionist doctrine of the Catholic Church they only have monetary value to the Vatican.

The “scam” is that the Catholic Church and its adherents mistreated the Jews for centuries for practicing their religion and yet they collected Jewish sacred texts and objects as if they esteemed Judaism.

"The truth is that Palestine is no more real than Never-Never Land."

Except that there is a region inhabited by people who call themselves Palestinian after the region. Modern associations and identities are irrelevant in the historical context. The percentage of the people residing in Israel who can trace their ancestry to the region is at least as high among the Palestinians as it is the with the predominantly European Jews who also inhabit Israel

The history of human habitation of the Holy Land, in particular the Natufian neolithic culture, dates back nearly 10,000 years before the arrival of Abraham. The Bronze Age Canaanite period began a full 2,000 years before Abraham wandered in from Ur to claim the land.

Within the next 2500 years the Jews only governed the region for about 300 years. Egyptians, Assyrians, Hittites, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Malmuk Egyptians, Khurds, Crusaders, Ottoman Turks, Napoleonic French, Brits have all had a claim in their time. In this context the pope is as legitimate and anyone, and more entitled than many to offer advice.

"The “scam” is that the Catholic Church and its adherents mistreated the Jews for centuries..."

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. You are a hypocrite. You claim that the actions and genetics of your ancestors gives you privilege and entitlement over the land and sovereignty of the region but deny it to Catholics who trace their spiritual heritage to the very same patriarchs, events, Covenants, and artifacts. Your anti-Catholic hatred is every bit as ugly as the antisemitism you protest.

It seems to me that the Pope is old and mixed up about what his job really, is and he seems not to read the bible either.

"Um... the Church already submitted to the split of Rome in 1870. That is why Vatican City is a separate country, completely surrounded by the city of Rome which is part of the Italian State."

Then they wouldn't mind "splitting" it again and shipping the Palestinians from Israel over to Rome.

"That is if you exclude YHvH and His Chosen People !"

The moment Christ arose from the dead the Temple was rebuilt and those who have accepted Christ as their personal Saviour became the new Chosen People.

After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. - Acts 15:7

If the good Rabbi had any brains or education he would know that the existence of the Vatican as a separate entity was the result of Rome being SPLIT!

If it’s the same land – it certainly IS inconsistent!

Incorrect. The Bible does not specify precise land boundaries. The Bible does not address who the Gaza Strip is supposed to belong to. The Bible also does not state whether or not certain countries should or should not exist such as a Palestian State. I'd ask you to specify verses if you believe this to be the case but taht would be silly as there are no verses that specify this. As a Christian surely know this. You should first understand what the Bible is and what it isn't before attempting to instruct others and lead people astray.

NAsbU Acts 15:7 After there had been much debate,
Peter stood up and said to them,
"Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you,
that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe.
My understanding of Acts 15:7, is that after this time gentiles
can now be grafted into YHvH's Chosen People for salvation.
The only apostle authorized to go to the gentiles was Paul(Sha'ul).
Peter went to Babylon, the largest community of Jews outside of the Holy Land.

YHvH's larger plan of salvation, where His People are blinded for a time,
in order to bring His salvation to the gentile nations.

NAsbU Romans 11:15 For if their ( His Chosen People )
rejection is the reconciliation of the world,
what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

And their ultimate salvation after a period of blindness is guaranteed by YHvH's covenant :
NAsbU Romans 11:25 For I do not want you, brethren,
to be uninformed of this mystery--
so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--
that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until
the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;

26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written
(in Isaiah 59),
"THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION,
HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."

27 "THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS."

28 From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake,
but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers;

29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

What’s that supposed to mean? Are you claiming Moses drafted a map with land boundaries and placed it in the Torah? LOL

No it is you that is ignorant ... because you can't produce verses in the Torah that depict precise land boundaries. Put up or shut up.
