Sarah Palin makes a play for Democrat votes: Appears to be planning to lead a third party
The London First Post ^ | July 13, 2009 | Jonathan Harwood

Sarah Palin still won't say whether she's building towards a presidential campaign in 2012. But she does plan to stay involved in national politics and appears to be casting herself as the possible leader of a new movement in American politics, one that would welcome Republicans and Democrats.

"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," she said in an interview with the Washington Times on Sunday. "People are so tired of the partisan stuff - even my own son is not a Republican," she added. Her son, Track, 20, who is serving with the US Army in Iraq, and her husband, Todd, are registered as 'non-partisan' in Alaska.

She also claimed that her decision to stand down as Governor of Alaska - which was revealed in a bizarre press conference on July 3 - was because the barrage of press attacks and allegations about her conduct and ethics had undermined her political programme.

The decision has bolstered her popularity among Republicans. A USA Today-Gallup poll found two-thirds of Republicans questioned wanted her to remain "a major national political figure".

It also seems to confirm the thoughts of those commentators who suspect that the prospect of national fame rather than ideology is her guiding star.

Andrew Sullivan, writing in the Sunday Times, said: "I love the idea of Sarah Palin: a brassy no-nonsense enemy of bloated government and corruption. That was probably John McCain's rough idea of who she was in the five minutes his staff vetted her, and on the one occasion he'd met her, before offering her a chance to be leader of the free world. The idea of Sarah Palin, though, is sadly not the reality of Sarah Palin.

"The reality of Sarah Palin is that politics is a means to her higher goal: celebrity. Every action she takes is designed to make sense... if you believe that government is really a version of a reality show.

"The remote, David Lynch-style location, the family often in trouble with the law, the pregnant teenage daughter and her impossibly handsome redneck boyfriend, the boyfriend's angry sister, an ornery Alaskan trooper, a few moose and mysterious pregnancies... and, well, the mini-series never ends. The best guess I've heard of the real reason for her abrupt departure is: 'I'm a celebrity... get me out of here!'"

One of Palin's first engagements after leaving office on July 26 comes on August 8 when she will address a Republican women's rally in California - in an aeroplane hangar that houses a retired presidential aircraft Air Force One, prompting more questions about her ambitions. Media will be banned from the meeting.

If she does, for a republican party that nominates John McCain and promotes Romney or Huckabee as potentials for 2012, I'm out of here.

Where Sarah leads, I'll follow. The vacuum of true conservative leadership in the republican party has left me with no choice.

“I’d gladly trade some of these radicals in DC for a few RINOS.”

Over time the whole spectrum moves left. As Republicans become moderates, democrats become more liberal. Before you know it, there are no real conservative ideals, not even wimpish RINO ones. It’s time to break that mold and that future.

Since conservatives outnumber RINOs in the Republican party, and Palin’s strategy as others have elaborated above is actually a “bigger tent” of regular conservative americans (vast majority of voters) then the RINO “big tent” of moving left and also abandoning fiscal, social and constitutional conservatives, I suggest with respect that you get with the agenda.

Me too. And my family. And my extended family.

We want to vote for something we believe in. Not something just to stop the other side. That last campaign, and Palin especially, made us realise how unsatisfactory the situation was, and what was a better solution. Palin should lead the GOP, or go independent. Nothing less.

Since conservatives outnumber RINOs in the Republican party,

I'm glad to see you acknowledge that fact. This is an excellent base on which to build. Let's build. There are NO conservatives in the Democrat party.

I don’t want her as VP UNLESS there is a very, very, very good conservative running for President. Romney and Newt would be out of the running. Newt bought into the GW propaganda, among other things.

"Who’s “worshipping”?"

Well, rest assured she's not the only one who feels that way.

Some of these threads are downright scary. You'd think this woman was the Second Coming. Tell me, will ANY honest dialogue and/or criticism ever be allowed, or will be all be sent to our corners or told to go back to D.U. if we offer any?

I hope she begins to build resistance to socialism, and that can only come from a new party.

Wish that were true, but she has had meetings with Kissinger, Mr. New World Order. Which seems to me to imply the same old, same old.

In some ways you are correct. Populism as a bottom up movement is highly individualistic, which makes it difficult to succeed because while the individuals can unite against something, they have problems uniting for something.

And when you implement populism from the top down, you end up with something like the New Deal.

Any way, whether you accept it or not, there is a wave of populism sweeping the US and the world. And that populist wave is re-aligning the political parties in the US.

The only question is whether the economic populists and cultural populists will re-unite in the democratic party or the republican party.

Most likely that will be the democrat party because the democrat party is the traditional populist party. In which case, the GOP will revert to the traditional elitist party

Those who believe that the elites should make decisions for the rest of us, and those of us who want to make decisions for ourselves. Elitists vs Individualists. Doesn’t matter what letter they have after their name. This is the true conflict.

Well said. I'm with you.

I was referring to the present situation of Major Cook's deployment orders being rescinded when he challenged the fact that Obama is not qualified to be president.

Some say that would make McCain president as he was the only valid candidate running for president.

Of course, I'm not planning on it but as long as we're fantasizing about Palin, why not make her VP--NOW!!

Douglas Adams had an excellent parody of our electoral system.

"It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."

"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"

"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."

"I did," said Ford. "It is."

"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"

"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."

"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"

"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."

"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"

"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

I’ve not seen anything that approaches the “messiah” associations made with 0bama. They outright SAID he was the “messiah”.

Yes, she is a flawed human, as all of us are, and as all the men and women that God uses for His purpose are.

There is, indeed, something especially different about Palin, however, as evidenced by the strong reactions, both positive and negative (the negatives are the biggest indicator for me). It leads one to speculate on the divine purpose. If you’re a believer in the Sovereign God, you do indeed look for divine purpose in all things. (Rom 8:28)

I would feel better if Sarah went independent and took her 50+ million supporters with her

But since Obama won nearly 70 million votes, I still guess you feel OK if this gets him reelected right?

A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.
