Jon Stewart Rips into Birthers

In the past week, there has been growing attention online and on cable television to the so-called "birther" movement of people who believe, against all the evidence, that President Obama was not born in the United States.

Last night, comedian Jon Stewart brought his viewers up to date on the high points of that undernews narrative, to use the Mickey Kaus phrase (earlier used by William Safire) for that odd amalgam of rumor, myth, speculation and actual facts that circulates as word of mouth and online....

There is a problem, there are internet myths circulating that help to muddy the water, but the biggest problem is O himself. He refuses to release key documents, and he parses his words ever so carefully.

So after a while, people start to wonder why. I’m starting to wonder why.

Perhaps another candidate I’d give the benefit of the doubt. But this is the guy who’s tied up with too many shady characters, between the crooks at ACORN, and Ayers, and Mansour, and Rezko, and Wright, that I have little reason to trust in his overall integrity.

After the way they hounded Bush about his military records, they’ve got some nerve calling us nuts. The only thing that makes me wonder is that birth announcement in the newspaper. I don’t know how to answer those critics.

I have to wonder about the newspaper announcements too. He was a US citizen by virtue of being born to a US citizen mother. Why would they want to fake an Hawaiian birth announcement (or certificate of live birth for that matter)? What’s the motive unless you’re ready to say that someone, 48 years ago, knew that they would groom this no name, mixed race kid to be president and he’d need to be natural born?

The newspaper announcement could have been placed by the grandparents to save face, or it could have been placed by the dept. of vital stats when the Certificate of Live Birth was recorded.

Keep in mind that a certificate of live birth can be issued for a child born out of the state to parents who have been residents within the last year.

According to WND, the street address in that newspaper announcement was never a residence of Zero’s parents. Also, the newspapers based these ads on state-issued certification rather than hospitals. WND concludes that these birth announcements are not solid evidence of a Hawaiian birth.

The point is that the ad was not placed by the parents or grandparents, but was automatically generated from state records (not hospital records). Therefore there is no need for the elaborate theory of deliberate bogus ad placement (ridiculing this theory is a favorite device of Obama's supporters to refute "birther" arguments).

So the question remains: what is on the state records that Obama is so terrified of revealing?

Please Jon, show us the evidence you have based your assertions upon that would stand up in a court of law. Please do, so all the world can see.

If you cannot, you are just as guilty of conjecture as you accuse the “birthers”.

Well, yes. But my reply wasn’t about “natural citizen birth.” I was answering your question re: why anyone would fake a birth announcement.

As to natural citizen birth, you do know that Stanley Ann Dunham did not meet the criteria (over 14 years of age and a resident of the state for at least five years) to pass on citizenship if he were, indeed, born abroad?

It’s entirely possible that the child was born out of country, registered by the family since his mother had recently lived in Hawaii for at least a year and intended to return, issued a Certificate of Live Birth, and a newspaper announcement resulted from that. Or the grandparents could have placed the announcement, as I suggested, to save face.

I don’t know what Obama is hiding. It may have nothing to do with where he was born but rather with other circumstances that would, apparently, be damaging.

He has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep all his records — birth, college, medical, etc. — hidden. Something stinks, and it will eventually come out.

This "birther" stuff is an embarrassment, and a damaging one -- nobody likes a Gore sore loser.

You know, I agree with you here. I have two problems with the birthers.

First of all, it reeks of conspiracy cliches. It’s all about the “lone voices in the wilderness” (patent pending) who know “the ultimate truth” (tm), but they’re surrounded by the sheeple who meekly bow to “the evil powers that be” (Copyright expired). Never mind the fact that for this to have any merit, Obama’s parents would have to have psychic powers that would make Nostrodamus look like that weird hippy chick who gets drunk and stoned and then go around read people’s palms in a slurred voice at the Lilith Fair concert. It’s just that the birthers make such an easy target. Their rants are badly spelled and even more badly expressed. They’re inarticulate, they’re angry, and they give the rest of us a bad name.

Which brings me to the second problem I have with the birthers: Everything I listed above plays RIGHT into the hands of Obama (whom, let me remind you, I despise) and his cronies. Right. Into. Their. Hands!

I mean, I keep reading people’s posts asking why Obama just doesn’t release the documents. Why should he? The birther movement is a dream come true for this guy. Every post about his birth certificate is a post that’s not about the economy. Or the stimulus package. Or his plans for rogue nation states that are going to call him on his bad plays and not give in, even after he asks pretty please with Dane’s Geld on top. Moreover, every member of the military who refuses to follow orders reflects poorly on the rest of us. No, let me take that back. Not poorly. Abysmally. Yes, I know the guy’s a Freeper, and if you think that’s not going to come back and bite us on the recticular area, you are sadly mistaken. There aren’t many things scarier to the populace of a free country than the specter of the members of armed forces rising against a democratically elected government, and if Major Cook had actually intended on scaring Americans into voting for Obama in 2012, he could not have done a better job.

If you’re at all interested in my opinion, I think there are two possible reasons Obama isn’t releasing his birth certificate yet. One, he’s waiting for the birthers to majorly overextend themselves, after which he merely produces the certificate and makes us all look like fools even more than we’ve made ourselves. Two, I’m not sure what hospital staff names are on the birth certificate, attending doctor, midwife, clerical staff, but whoever has his or her name there is going to be hassled, harrassed, and hounded every bit as much as anyone whose name was connected to 9/11, however indirectly, has been tormented by the truthers, and Obama wishes to avoid that. On that, he and I are in perfect agreement.

So short version of the above: Birthers, if you want to hand the country to Obama in 3 1/2 years, then just keep it up. If you want to do something constructive that might actually get common sense back into the White House, then just grow up.
