Overcompensation: (psychiatry) an attempt to overcome a real or imagined defect or unwanted trait by overly exaggerating its opposite.
Today brings a prime example of the phenomenon: Brian Williams overcompensating for his image as a pampered straight arrow by joking about having a vast staff of servants, looking forward to the prospect of watching some nude male swimming, and, yes, doing meth to get going in the morning.

I always thought he looked like he had a chronic hemmoroid problem that made sitting extremely uncomfortable.
To tell you how far out of it I feel I am (and that is a good thing) I have avoided the so-called news from the networks for years and when the headline talked about Williams jokes, I could not for the life of me imagine who Williams was.
After looking at the post I still recognized his picture but figured this story was about him sticking his foot in something and wasn’t going to get corrected as he should. Unfortunately the world hasn’t changed.
Who is this person? I seem to remember a basketball player named Brian Williams, but he retired years ago.
