from CBS report on investigation into Rathergate.
After this thread, I went to the CBS investigation report and saw this —

QUOTE:
60 Minutes Wednesday personnel were well aware that the September 8 Segment addressed extremely sensitive issues the incumbent Presidents TexANG service record in the midst of an increasingly bitter Presidential campaign. Indeed, Rather regarded the Segment as radioactive. Accordingly, senior personnel within CBS News, including those at 60 Minutes Wednesday, fully expected that there would be many critics. However, they seriously underestimated the ferocity of the assaults on the documents and CBS News alleged motives in airing the Segment.
The attacks on the September 8 Segment began virtually immediately. One of the first came on freerepublic.com, a website: [E]very single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman. In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts. The use of proportionally spaced fonts did not come into common use for office memos until the introduction of laser printers, word processing software, and personal computers. They were not widespread until the mid to late 90s. Before then, you needed typesetting equipment, and that wasnt used for personal memos to file. Even the Wang systems that were dominant in the mid 80s used monospaced fonts. I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old.
85 This was followed on the morning of September 9 by further attacks, mostly by bloggers with a conservative agenda, challenging the authenticity of the documents. These included stories on Powerlineblog.com86 and littlegreenfootballs.com.87 Finally, by about 3 p.m., Matt Drudge, the author of the widely read Drudge Report website, had joined the fray, and, thereafter, the onslaught of attacks on the authenticity of the Killian documents was unrelenting. 60 minutes was also involved in an effort to fake a "secret prison" in Afghanistan with the same nut who sold the bogus al Qaeda "training camp footage" to the media.

By 1973, when Bush would have been a pilot, they were largely used as target drones.
that the banner was refering to the specific crew on that ship who were cycling home...
...and who had been on their way back to San Diego six months earlier, when they received orders to do a 180 and sail to the Gulf, thus increasing their deployment to twelve months.
Goldberg’s point is that Mary Mapes knew it before the broadcast which called GWB a coward and ‘draft-dodger.’
Saw Goldberg on BOR last night setting the recod straight. I’m not holding my breath waiting for anyone to carry the story.
I’m glad Bernard Goldberg continued to look into this story. It was a ‘dirty trick’, and Freepers were a big part of calling CBS on it.

Yes, GW did volunteer to go to Vietnam, but he did not have any flying time in the current aircraft being used in Vietnam, and therefore, the MILITARY would not allow him to go.
While the aircraft was not that different, it was a 2-seater (I believe) - a type of aircraft Bush had never flown in.
Also stated was the fact that the military was NOT SENDING ANY MORE PILOTS TO VIETNAM at that time anyway - because they were winding down the war.
As always .. the left will demonize everything Bush does and says but none of the things the left has alleged Bush doing have actually been proven correct - which is normal for the left. They just throw things out there and hope something will stick.
