Right wingers (in the original meaning) were absolutist supporters of the French monarchy. Not much advocacy of freedom and liberty there.
The problem is that there is no link whatsoever between the Right of the French Revolution, when the terms Right and Left originated, and American-style conservatism.
OTOH, American liberals today are more or less directly descended from the French Left of the time.

I fully realize that...if Zippy had viewed Brown as a genuine lefty “comrade,” he might not have dissed him so badly.
What I can’t grasp is Labour’s transparent attempt to flood Britain with immigrants in order to set up new constituencies...and the locals—until now at least—have put up with it.
I watch the UK carefully because I have friends there, can’t stand Islam, and worry about it gaining a smilar foothold here.
