It is very disturbing to me to see people saying something is fishy on the comments for this story. If it has teeth, it can bite. This dog wasn't a large breed.

Any dog can bite. My sister brought over her little dog Nemo on Friday(Half maltese/half pomeranian, only weights 8 1/2 pounds) for some reason, bit me on the lip, it was my fault for getting in his face wanting to kiss him, so today I went and got a tetenus shot done(needed one anyway) and 10 days of Cipro since dogs can carry bacteria. Bottom line is, anything can set a dog off, little dog, big dog. After all is said and done, they are still dogs

not convinced the dog attacked the 4-year-old.,

ummm - ummm - I just can't think of an answer to that...

And the uncle who hit the dog with a hammer to keep his niece, whose face was being torn apart, from possible death - those size bites in the neck could have killed her easily - and the uncle may be charged?

I have lived to long. The world is going stark raving mad.

Never got bit over getting too face-to-face with a dog, but I’ve gotten big slobbery licks on the kisser.

He’s done it to me before, but last time I pulled back before anything happened. He gets very picky when my sister is holding him and someone gets into his personal space. I guess he has some Pomeranian in him, plus there is another dog in the house too, and he does that when he gets too close to him, but never bites him. I think he did it by accident. Plus I tend to smother him with too many kisses, I guess it annoys him

Absolutely correct. Yet some people are too damn dumb to realize that, no matter how docile a dog is, there are certain things that may set them off for (usually) territorial and/or defensive reasons, but they'll continue to do it again and again, and blame the dog. Dogs are intuitive. Dogs are intelligent. But at the end of the day, as you said, they're dogs.

Girl probably offered lollipop to dog to sniff. Instead of sniffing, dog grabbed lollipop. Girl tried to pull it back and dog bit her in several places.

Sadly, some of the small breeds have very sharp temperaments. Poms are one I would put in that category. I don’t care where you had your face, the dog should not have bitten you. Fortunately it’s small and unlikely to do the devastating damage of a large dog, but still, I would not excuse a dog for biting like that.

Luckily I was not hurt. He has two big front teeth which I think nicked my lip, doesn’t look bad at all, but it did bleed, a lot, since its the lip(very sensitive area). Nemo is a good boy, he just did a bad thing. I think for some reason those Poms and even the Maltese are very aggressive dogs. I know our neighbor down the street from us has a full bred Maltese, boy is she a barker, and when you bend down to pet her, she gives you a look like she wants to kill you

>>I have lived too long. The world is going stark raving mad. <<

I agree.
I love dogs, but I never trusted them around my kids.
They are dogs, they see the kids as puppies.

Sometimes dogs hurt puppies and a bite to the face is scar forever.

People who humanize dogs should have their heads examined.

I hope for your sister’s sake the little dog never bites a child, because she could be in for a lawsuit, especially since the dog has bitten before. And yes, many of the small breeds can be sharp, AND for some reason, often the owners play into this (not on purpose).

Yeah, she is very careful. Thank goodness this wasn’t done to a stranger. They could have sued

My little poodle Tango used to try to take teething biscuits away from my 18 month old daughter...She learned to grab his lip and twist till he squealed.

It made me realize that NO dog, of any size, should be left alone with a kid.

That is absolutely true.

We used to be a foster home for rescued Australian Shepherds. Every one was different. I would never leave a small child alone with even a docile Aussie. They are active and will treat the child like a puppy - adult dogs nip puppies to get them to behave.

I also taught my kids that getting into a dog's face (when it isn't your dog that you have trained) is a bad idea. That is an aggressive move to a dog, as my son found out when he forgot and did it in play with a dog he was dog sitting. Fortunately, the dog did not break the skin, just scared my son. (And sent the owners into conniptions.)

I live in Davidson County too.

Very disturbing story. My father and I were both bitten by a Scottie, several years ago. Dog was little, but very aggressive. Got my dad in an artery in his arm and he almost bled to death before he could get to a hospital. Dad was trying to pet the dog.

Turns out that, once the dog was taken from the family that owned him and placed with another family, his aggressive behavior calmed dramatically. Loving family made all the difference.
