US Relinquishes Control of Internet
Guardian, UK ^ | September 30, 2009 | Bobbie Johnson

Posted on 10/02/2009 6:51:07 PM PDT by NorwegianViking

After complaints about American dominance of the internet and growing disquiet in some parts of the world, Washington has said it will relinquish some control over the way the network is run and allow foreign governments more of a say in the future of the system. Icann – the official body that ultimately controls the development of the internet thanks to its oversight of web addresses such as .com, .net and .org – said today that it was ending its agreement with the US government. The deal, part of a contract negotiated with the US department of commerce, effectively pushes California-based Icann towards a new status as an international body with greater representation from companies and governments around the globe. Icann had previously been operating under the auspices of the American government, which had control of the net thanks to its initial role in developing the underlying technologies used for connecting computers together. But the fresh focus will give other countries a more prominent role in determining what takes place online, and even the way in which it happens – opening the door for a virtual United Nations, where many officials gather to discuss potential changes to the internet. Icann chief Rod Beckstrom, a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur and Washington insider who took over running the organisation in July, said there had been legitimate concerns that some countries were developing alternative internets as a way of routing around American control. "It's rumoured that there are multiple experiments going on with countries forking the internet, various countries have discussed this," he said. "...He added that the changes would prove powerful when combined with upcoming plans to allow web users to use addresses with names in Chinese, Arabic or other alphabets other than Latin...

The people who own the companies that assemble these “widgets” understand this very, very well. I believe in capitalism, make no mistake, but this is exploitation in a sense. The people who are being exploited think they are lucky and the people who make these global decisions think they are good business people. They couldn’t care less about America. They have no stake or emotional investment in the US.

There have been articles going back months about the US giving up some control of the internet to international bodies, but if this were really some ceding of free speech that subjected the US internet network to foreign control the net would be on fire about it.

I stick with my statement that few understand what this means.

Not to mention the speech restrictions of our Muslim brothern in the world.

Anyone remember the muslim cartoons and how they were addressed in Europe - imagine non-US control of the internet and you get the picture.

****but if this were really some ceding of free speech that subjected the US internet network to foreign control the net would be on fire about it.****

This is what concerns me. If this is just not understood there would still be lots of talk about it.

Is it possibly widely understood that this is nothing more than a curtail of conservative and christian speech, therefore the liberal community is well aware of it but chooses to endorse it? As well as be silent about it?

That should make security of the web easy....NOT

What a freakin disaster. We will have to go back to a numeric system.

And the ARabs will want to control and censor everything , just as Red China does.

I can't imagine that if that were true, that conservatives and Christians would be so quiet about it. And all the most prominent conservative talk show hosts also have web sites where they post and stream all their opinions, so Limbaugh and Levin and Hannity and all of them would be affected by any curtailing of free speech on the net. If there were any certainly to this move, they would all be talking about it daily.

There is always a danger that when the US starts fooling around with international bodies that the US way of doing things might be diluted, but I still say few really understand what this move means.

You're right, they have no attachment to the USA. They are being global benefactors, doling out a dollar a day to the wretched as they toil 18 hours a day under unsafe working conditions, living in company bunks. When workers die, they are replaced by many in waiting. OSHA standards? Please. Carbon tax? Not likely.

All of these corporations claim that they had to outsource production to these hellholes because their competitors did. It's just business.

The long-term fly in the ointment is that these wretched poor will soon (if not already) decide that they deserve real wages, benefits and cable TV. They will no longer be happy on a dollar a day. They want ten dollars a day, plus insurance. And a vacation. Just like Americans.

While we may be happy with ten dollars a day, no benefits. How about that internet regulation?

Imho, the rats will always find a place to hide. They will take their profits and hide. Somewhere on a pristine sandy beach with a private security force.

Both ends of the spectrum kill creativity and entrepreneurship - the wild cowboy capitalist and the clueless communist. They both want to control and they both think their way is best with no collaboration. The labels mean nothing. Capitalist and communist merge into a kind of fascist blob.

ICAAN controls domain name registraions and authorizing commercial registrars. Spammers and internet scam operations will often use “throw-away” domain names registered under fictious names to cover their tracks. Having a cooperative registrar helps things along. Most of the identity theft scams seem to originate in Eastern Europe, and targets American citizens. What’s not to like?

I warned everyone I knew last year that Obama would give control of the Internet to the UN if he was elected President.

Many thought I was being paranoid....

It is time for a pirate Internet just like in the old days off pirate bulletin boards. A total underground or grassroots thing that can not be censored like free speech.
