WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama has declared swine flu a "national emergency," the White House said Saturday, as the United States reels from millions of cases of infection and over 1,000 deaths.

The Swine Flu emergency declaration is just the beginning of such declarations until he ultimately declares Martial Law. That, I am assuming, will occur just before the 2010 elections. He’s not going to risk losing any of these synchophants surrounding him now. CO

Less than 1% of people who will come down the “FLU STRAIN” will die. Sad? Tragic? Hell yes but, the mortality rates for this flu and the other strains that show up every year are about the same.
It isn’t even new. They pulled the same crap in 1976 and some 5000 people were paralyzed from the vaccination and never recovered.

I did some reading about the National Emergencies Act and what I’ve read so far - and please Freepers, correct me if I am wrong - it limits the powers of the President and somehow suspends some rights of habeas corpus.

emergency powers. With the exception of the habeas corpus clause, the Constitution
makes no allowance for the suspension of any of its provisions during a national
emergency. Disputes over the constitutionality or legality of the exercise of
emergency powers are judicially reviewable. Indeed, both the judiciary and Congress,
as co-equal branches, can restrain the executive regarding emergency powers. So can
public opinion.”
Further on in this report there is this, and this is what really scares me because it is the job and duty of Congress to rescind or modify these powers:
“These delegations or grants of power authorize the President to meet the
problems of governing effectively in times of crisis. Under the powers delegated by
such statutes, the President may seize property, organize and control the means of
production, seize commodities, assign military forces abroad, institute martial law,
seize and control all transportation and communication, regulate the operation of
private enterprise, restrict travel, and, in a variety of ways, control the lives of United
States citizens. Furthermore, Congress may modify, rescind, or render dormant such
delegated emergency authority.”
My question is - WHY the national emergency? Why drop it on a late Friday night/Saturday morning? Something this is just not sitting well with me at all. Now I am not saying Obama is going to declare martial law tomorrow and start patrolling the streets and putting people into camps, but this is overkill for a flu outbreak.
Well, whatever is going around my area of the country, I’ve already had it and my husband, children and grandchildren have had it. No deaths to report around here. It wasn’t that bad, nothing different than any other flu.

The truth is, I’m not taking any Flu vaccinations. I have had one in my life and I haven’t had the Flu in 15 years. I don’t intend to start now. Especially not now. CO
I found these on politico, but it is not detailed as to HOW HIPAA is going to be modified or HOW they are going to waive or modify requirements for Medicare, Medicaid, or SCHIP. What is being modified? WHAT is being waived? WHY is this being done?
