NEW ORLEANS -- Federal officials plan to ban sales of raw oysters harvested from the Gulf of Mexico unless the shellfish are treated to destroy potentially deadly bacteria.

Not that I like raw oysters (clams are much better, IMHO), but your right to consume the shellfish of your choice should not come under the pervue of the nanny state.
They came for the oysters, but that was OK because I liked clams. Then, they came for the clams.......
They can have my oysters when they pry them from my cold dead hands.....
And so forth.
How many deaths from oysters last year??
Obviously Gulf Coast oystermen haven’t been meeting their political campaign contribution quotas. Welcome to Chicago, boys...
However Chinese grown shrimp laced with antibiotics and mercury are A-OK!
I wonder what the plan is for oysters sold by the sack still in the hull.
One of my fondest memories is sitting outdoors with friends at a oyster shack in Fort Walton Beach and consuming 3 dozen raw oysters and a six pack of beer. Looks like I had better get down there soon if I want to relive that memory.
“About 15 people die each year in the United States from raw oysters infected with Vibrio vulnificus, which typically is found in warm coastal waters between April and October.”

Most of the deaths occur among people with weak immune systems caused by health problems like liver or kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, or AIDS.”
Get a doctor’s note before eating oysters?
What’s REALLY behind this ruling?
Thanks. I did a search for oysters. I guess I was wrong to assume an article about oysters would actually have the word oyster in the keywords.
Heck you do more than I do then.
I just do a title search and then I’m done with it.
In other words I just wanted to link the two threads a little not imply that you failed on your end (which you did not).
Search titles, not keywords.
I wish titles were the default search, and not keywords.

Radiation would work just fine for those. The bias against treating food with radiation to kill bacteria is simply ridiculous. There are ZERO harmful effects from such processes. The whole "bad radiation" meme is simply scientifically ludicrous. Any chemical reaction products induced in the food by the irradiation are no different from those formed by free radical processes that happen naturally.
Either it’s a problem, and it needs to be dealt with immediately, or its not a problem and we can live without the regulation. Starting the ban in 2011 means that there’s some kind of strong arming going on here. Didn’t know the fishing lobby was that strong.
Usually all the recent articles will be on the first page of any title search.
For this article I'd go to the search field and type
title:oysters
and if I found nothing, just to be sure, I'd also to a title search for
title:proposal
I use the title search all the time to find interesting articles, and I also frequently use the keyword search, too.
If I'd like to explore your postings, then I simply type in

and its a quick search with all your posts displayed in reverse chronological order.
I’m sure a lot of gulf state legislators are going to weigh in on this.
At least I hope so...
There is nothing better than a pitcher of beer and a couple dozen oysters with hot sauce (absolute heaven).
“...treated to destroy potentially deadly bacteria.”
I always thought that was part of the fun about eating oysters, ya never know when you might get a bad one.
