Election results rattle some Democrats

With independent voters favoring GOP candidates in New Jersey and Virginia, many in Congress wonder whether they'll lose electoral support themselves if they stick with Obama on controversial issues.

Reporting from Washington and Madison, Wis.

Even before voters went to the polls this week, moderate congressional Democrats were anxious. Would the swing voters who coalesced around Barack Obama almost exactly one year ago stay with the Democrats or defect to the Republicans?

The answer came Tuesday night as Republican gubernatorial candidates swept to power in New Jersey and Virginia, with the help of large packs of self-described independents.

Exit polls circulating on the House floor Wednesday were even more unnerving to Democrats. The Republican candidates, the polls indicated, had received the votes of two-thirds of independent voters...

--snip--

"Republicans won independents by 2 to 1. It was overwhelming. It was breathtaking," Ayres said. "That is a huge shift since the last two elections in a very short amount of time."

Ayres said that his polling data indicate a clear shift in the independent vote starting in April. He said that "spending and debt" are the reasons -- "starting with the bailouts, followed up with the stimulus package, the budget with its $1-trillion deficit, healthcare with another trillion."...

--snip--

"It's not all up to the president; I know that," said Galen Milchman, a 19-year-old pizza deliverer who said he had worked for Obama's election a year ago. "But the Democrats are in control of the House and the Senate, and so we were going to get all this change. Where is it? It makes me feel very cynical."

And between getting a clue and changing their act or flat out abolishing free elections, which do you think the RATs are going to choose?

The results would be a good sign if we were dealing with people who actually play by the rules, but we all know the RATs are always looking for a way around them.

They (and we) haven’t ever seem something like this in recent history.

Even my folks, who have been timid to even admit they are conservatives, have been at Tea Parties this year - and loving it. It's a great sign.

I think it’s great if Obama and the Dems want to tell themselves that this election wasn’t about Obama. Denial is as good as chaos in keeping them off their game and time will tell whether it is, or not.

I thought it was hilarious when Gibbs said that the VA results and the reasons voters stated they voted - the economy - were only local and did not reflect anything on Obama. The 'economy' is a local issue? I guess he thinks only VA is having some unemployment issues!

What Mr. Milchman (better check this name on whitepages dot com, BTW) meant to say was, it's only all up to the president when it's a Republican." Thanks neverdem.

Hello all, I am the numbskull, cool aid drinking pizza boy. First off, I'm 18 not 19. I would like to say that the amount you are judging me, based on a crude misrepresentation of what I said. These are not my words verbatim. I don't know what you think makes me ignorant, nor am i feeling any more demoralized then when this started. In my opinion Obama is merely another over-hyped lying politician who happens to be our first black president. So for me to be demoralized I would have had to have faith in Obama in the first place and I didn't. Also I don't hope for change when delivering pizza's, what kind of moron would want change, I want paper money. For the man who also delivered pizzas, I don't know how you think you are different from me, you were going to college, I am gaining residency so that I can go to college significantly cheaper. And to all you others who are putting me down for being a pizza boy, I don't know what job you held right after you got out of High school, without a college degree what is it that you did, did you rely on your rich daddies? Also to you who said they better check my name, just cause it is not a common name at all means that it probably isn't real. Well actually it is real, it is derived from the German word milch which in fact means milk, so a simple explanation was that my ancestor was a milk man. I guess its in my families genes to be poor, ignorant delivery people forever.
