Hiding evidence of global cooling: Junk science exposed among climate-change believers
Washington Times ^ | November 24, 2009 | Editorial

Posted on 11/23/2009 9:39:37 PM PST by JohnRLott

Scientific progress depends on accurate and complete data. It also relies on replication. The past couple of days have uncovered some shocking revelations about the baloney practices that pass as sound science about climate change.

It was announced Thursday afternoon that computer hackers had obtained 160 megabytes of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in England. Those e-mails involved communication among many scientific researchers and policy advocates with similar ideological positions all across the world. Those purported authorities were brazenly discussing the destruction and hiding of data that did not support global-warming claims.

Professor Phil Jones, the head of the Climate Research Unit, and professor Michael E. Mann at Pennsylvania State University, who has been an important scientist in the climate debate, have come under particular scrutiny. Among his e-mails, Mr. Jones talked to Mr. Mann about the "trick of adding in the real temps to each series ... to hide the decline [in temperature]." . . .

And everyone who has known all along AGW was a fraud have collectively said duh! Hard to believe that those that bought the fraud consider themselves smart and oh so much more savvy than those cretinous, knuckldragging deniers....LOL!

"Academics who have purposely hidden data, destroyed information and doctored their results have committed scientific fraud.

These revelations of fudged science should have a cooling effect on global-warming hysteria and the panicked policies that are being pushed forward to address the unproven theory"

Ballgame.

” Here’s what you won’t see on tv, folks:

“More than 31,000 scientists have signed a petition denying that man is responsible for global warming.”

Whatever they believe, don’t you think the tv NEWS media should give us BOTH sides? “

We live in a weird Topsy-turvey world... Imagine trying to explain this to somebody from another planet! We are odd prideful, vapid, rather slow witted creatures apparently.

That’s the best article I have seen so far on the e-mails. They nailed it.

I am still waiting for the rest of the media to pick this up. When is Beck going to expose it?

Imagine trying to explain this to somebody from another planet! We are odd prideful, vapid, rather slow witted creatures apparently.

I have pointed this out to others as a sample of the insanity. We all go through school and learn about the history of the earth in "Earth Science" class. We learn about plate tectonics, the different periods, epochs, etc. We learn about the ice ages and glaciers. We know of heating and cooling. We learn that carbon is the most abundant element. We learn that plants need and like COs. We learn that CO2 is largely the result of decaying biodegradables....dead life. We learn that the earth goes through climate cycles and habitats are in a constant state of flux.

Then one day, some scientists and the media come out and say, forget all that. The earth's climate is stable and predictable except for the destructive nature of humans in the last 100 years. Because man invented the engine, the planet is doomed and humans are going to bring about our own destruction.

Huh? Really? CO2 huh? You mean that gas that all plants need and that all creatures alive and dead expel? That one? CO2 is going to be the end of the world as we know it?

The AGW folks do not and will not see that they have done anything wrong. “Anything” that they do to save mother earth from the evil, polluting capitalists is completely OK in their book.

Their only regret: getting caught.

I believe there should be charges of high crimes against humanity leveled against them.

The hockeystick was fake but acurate. Forget what the data shows, everyone knows that humans are burning fossil fuels, causing global warming and on the verge of destroying all of humanity. The only way to stop the earth from warming and killing everyone is to tax the hell out of industrialized nations (except China and India).

(sarcasm)

As damning as these e-mails are to these clowns' frame of mind, what I found most enlightening was a "read me" file apparently created by a programmer that was working with their "data" sets that contains his thoughts, comments, and changes regarding the code and data sets he was working with.

That file demonstrates that the previous programmer and the rest of the people involved with the data collection had zero clue how to work with large data sets (assuming the raw data itself wasn't fudged). The programmer comments repeatedly about how the data is undocumented to the point of not even being able to determine what a good potion of it even is or where it was from, if it was raw sensor data or if it was somehow modified, and about undocumented code functions that modify bits and pieces of the data in odd ways that don't make any sense.

Even if these guys were conducting themselves in an ethical manner, their results would have to be tossed on their merits for a total lack of control of the data they were working with!

Here are some examples:

8. Had a hunt and found an identically-named temperature database file which did include normals lines at the start of every station. How handy - naming two different files with exactly the same name and relying on their location to differentiate! Aaarrgghh!! Re-ran anomdtb:

So.. we don't have the coefficients files (just .eps plots of something). But what are all those monthly files? DON'T KNOW, UNDOCUMENTED. Wherever I look, there are data files, no info about what they are other than their names. And that's useless.. take the above example, the filenames in the _mon and _ann directories are identical, but the contents are not. And the only difference is that one directory is apparently 'monthly' and the other 'annual' - yet both contain monthly files.

..knowing how long it takes to debug this suite - the experiment endeth here. The option (like all the anomdtb options) is totally undocumented so we'll never know what we lost.

22. Right, time to stop pussyfooting around the niceties of Tim's labyrinthine software suites - let's have a go at producing CRU TS 3.0! since failing to do that will be the definitive failure of the entire project..

You can't imagine what this has cost me - to actually allow the operator to assign false WMO codes!! But what else is there in such situations? Especially when dealing with a 'Master' database of dubious provenance (which, er, they all are and always will be).

Emphasis mine.
