Acid oceans: the 'evil twin' of climate change

MONTEREY BAY NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY, Calif. – Far from Copenhagen's turbulent climate talks, the sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters reposing along the shoreline and kelp forests of this protected marine area stand to gain from any global deal to cut greenhouse gases.

These foragers of the sanctuary's frigid waters, flipping in and out of sight of California's coastal kayakers, may not seem like obvious beneficiaries of a climate treaty crafted in the Danish capital. But reducing carbon emissions worldwide also would help mend a lesser-known environmental problem: ocean acidification.

"We're having a change in water chemistry, so 20 years from now the system we're looking at could be affected dramatically but we're not really sure how. So we see a train wreck coming," said Andrew DeVogelaere, the sanctuary's research director, while out kayaking this fall with a reporter in the cold waters.

Nothing in the treaty negotiations specifically addresses the effects of carbon absorption in the oceans on marine life, which studies show is damaging key creatures' hard shells or skeletons.

No kidding! You seen that Malta volcano video..

The Earth and Cosmos be living things and occasionally flush who they will with extreme prejudice.. and there ain’t much driving a Prius is gonna do about it.

Reckun that newly discovered SuperEarth has its faults but maybe we best be building hugh spaceships and ‘get the heck out of Dodge’ before she blows..

***25 years ago Ted Danson was saying that the oceans will be dead in 20 years.***

And thiry five years ago it was said we would be under hundreds of feet of ice!

Scientists Discover and Image Explosive Deep-Ocean Volcano

"80 percent of the earth's volcanic activity occurs in the sea."

"The water from the volcano is very acidic, with some samples collected directly above the eruption measuring somewhere between battery acid and stomach acid." http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2009/20091217_volcano2.html

In the mid-Cretaceous, the CO2 levels were about ten times higher than today. The proof is in the varieties of calcium carbonate deposits that form at specific CO2 concentrations, and in gas bubbles trapped in Cretaceous amber.

Back then, the world was 8 - 10 degrees C warmer, and the oceans contained huge amounts of coral and other marine life - modern reefs pale in comparison. The lands were lush with greenery.

Zappa’s kids endorsed Al Gore in 2000. I think that Dee Snider too.

Somehow I think that John Denver and Frank Zappa would still have opposed him.

CRISWELL PREDICTS!

Can our whirling, turning, churning earth last out the night? Our geologists tell us that the danger to Mother Earth lies not in the uncharted vast of outer space, but from inner-earth! ...

Here is what will more than likely happen according to geologists: Small tidal waves will play havoc for no reason at all. The surface of the earth will bulge ever so slightly and highways will slightly buckle. Foundations will tip, and floors will slant. When you pour a cup of coffee or a glass of water, the rim will not level. Telephone coin boxes and vending machines will refuse to work. Delicate instruments will go haywire. Elevators will go out of whack. Jukeboxes will be mute. Radio and TV will fail. All electric power, gas and water service will cease. And then will come the time when garbage cans roll across the street for no apparent reason.

Then and only then will you realize the advanced corrosion spelling the end of our Earth. The seas will quickly fill up with a gooey mass of inner-earth rubble. Our streets and city lots, farms, and deserts will bubble up like a festered oil, marking the complete collapse. Has this happened before? More than likely. And it will again happen in your incredible future.

OH NOZE!

That's take a picture or video for those of us in Rio Linda.

Or are volcanos hiring press agents and taking manners courses?

This is a serious problem, and more of one than global warming. The most plausible remedy is ocean fertilization to increase CO2 uptake and sequestration. Yet the enviros oppose it.
