Don't trust Snopes

One would think an entire think-tank university staff is behind Snopes.

Not so. It's a couple — husband and wife.

Their opinions are considered bible by countless who check out "the facts" by going to Snopes.com. These countless include college profs, Congresspersons, the National Review writers, and masses climbing all over the grassroots.

As opposed to direct factual falsehoods, Snopes tends to lie by omission or false implication, they give conclusions that are unsupported by the stated facts, and they create strawmen arguments for positions they oppose so they can reach the desired outcome. E.g., they could say that Senator Tom Coburn has never denied killing JonBenet Ramsey (true) so they have to label that rumor “Undetermined.”

Plenty of history here about the Snopes ‘researchers’ being liberal Democrats.

Did you check out their take on “commander zero’s” birth certificate as mentioned in the article?

According to Snopes it is untrue that Martin Luther King is the only man honored by a national holiday because there is Columbus Day. But King is the only AMERICAN honored by a national holiday and that was the claim all along. Once Washington’s birthday became Prez Day that left us with just one AMERICAN so honored.

Is Snopes nom? Remember nom who used to post here back in THE day? He was an exciting poster. I also associated nom with Snopes Gold who used to post in the Yahoo Antifreeper forums. Does anyone recall?

I would appreciate seeing two examples of “lies” on Snopes

If you are capable of critical thinking, view how they mark the Obama Birth certificate story as false. Not uncertain, but false. Do they once mention that he has spent almost $2 Million preventing his records from being seen? Wouldn't that be part of the argument, if you were capable of thinking clearly? Ask yourself why wouldn't that be included in their argument?

Now you are beginning to think.

Look at the Bill Clinton murders. Are there any sentences given as to the known thuggery and coercion by his agents to U.S. citizens? You know, like when his thugs mentally hunted down Kathleen Wiley and killed her cat? Do you think they are not capable of further atrocities? Do you really think dozens of mysterious deaths, all tied to the Clintons, is a coincidence? Ask yourself questions.

Sometimes I think Snopes was created entirely to cover up for the Clinton Crimes.

Although it’s often referred to as President’s Day, Washington’s Birthday is still the official name of the federal holiday. It’s also still the name of the holiday for the state of California.

“...often referred to as President’s Day, Washington’s Birthday is still the official name of the federal holiday...”

Often? It is always referred to as President’s Day at Fort Benning and that’s pretty federal.

Thanks to all for thinking a bit on this. The blanket statement that Snopes lies is not useful to those of us who use it to explain or dispell stories in chain emails or to quiet the fears of friends who believe something false about a virus attack. Snopes can be extremely helpful here.

That Snopes might lean left on political issues is a different thing and I do not consult Snopes on such. To say that the b/c issue is political is not to say that the “birthers” are falsely campaigning for an Obama downfall. It means only that there are opinions and advocacies on both sides. And in a political argument as opposed to a scientific argument, one cannot choose which facts are relevant.

Again thanks. I aske for two examples and you gave me two.

Cheers!
Jim

Notice the first * note at the bottom.

http://www.opm.gov/Operating_Status_Schedules/fedhol/2010.asp

* This holiday is designated as “Washington’s Birthday” in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.

very left wing, which is why when they report something that favors conservatives, I figure it must be even worse than they say it is. For example the gun bill about having to be licensed to own any firearms

http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/blairholt.asp

They say yup it’s true, but the part about mental health examinations isn’t...

I tend to think even what they’ve admitted to being true is BAD ENOUGH but I bet they are just repeating the lines they’ve heard from the sponsors of the bill who insist “oh NOOO we wouldn’t DREAM of infringing anyone’s 2nd amendment rights THAT much to force a person to submit to a mental health screening!” um... yeah right. Just like the health care bill doesn’t have abortion coverage. Uhuh.
