Coburn warns against majority-vote tactic in weekly Republican address

Should Democrats use the budget reconciliation process to pass healthcare reform, it would fly in the face of public opinion, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said in the Republicans’ weekly address.

Coburn, a physician who attended this week’s bipartisan healthcare summit at the White House, repeated Republican calls to scrap the current healthcare proposals and start from scratch.

“Unfortunately, even before the summit took place the majority in Congress signaled its intent to reject our offers to work together,” he said. “Instead they want to use procedural tricks and backroom deals to ram through a new bill that combines the worst aspects of the bills the Senate and House passed last year.”

The White House and Democratic leaders in Congress have said that they will move forward with their existing reform proposals despite Republican calls to stop.

The senate bill doesn’t have the public option that is so loved by the hard lefties in the house and the Stupek democrats aren’t happy with the abortion language, so the votes aren’t there yet. Then there’s also Murtha’s death and Wexler’s departure and one other democrat is gone and Cao has said he won’t cross the line again, so she’s short unless some one else changes their tiny mind. Reelection is utmost on the minds of all those people. You betcha they like their House seats.

Someone on an earlier thread posted the actual situation with reconciliation which was pretty interesting. Basically, because of a parliamentary move by the Republicans in the Senate the House MUST vote on the bill first and I don't think Pelosi has the votes or it would already be done. All of the other interviews, press conferences, etc., don't mean a single thing as the House MUST take action first. Everything else is irrelevant.

“Majority rule tactic”?!?

Gee, odd how “The Hill” and the rest of the MSM never used that phrase to describe Senate G.O.P. attempts to confirm President Bush’s judicial appointments by a simple majority...

Mitch McConnel should tell the dumbocrats that if they use reconciliation to pass the health care bill, the next time Republicans control the Senate (quite possibly in 2011) we will end the filibuster once and for all...

IOW.....RECONCILIATION = DEATH OF THE FILIBUSTER!

I have to say that, with the exception of John Boehner who’s about half brain-dead, the pubs did very well at that meeting. They did a fine job of contrasting their face of reasonable, calm, rational common sense against the rat’s mean-spirited, dishonest manipulations.

That string of anecdotes about this or that sick person they told just made them look ridiculous.

Coburn was excellent at that meeting. I have to say Lamar Alexander opened quite well. Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor also stood out favorably. Kyl did quite well, too. They all did well, except for Boehner, who dithered and stammered. Please, Lord, if by some miracle we take back the House, please, please, please don’t let him become Speaker.

MEDIA BIAS alert.

When the GOP wanted majority vote for judges, it was “nuclear option”. Now the Democrats want to use the budget-process reconciliation for a huge non-budget bill, its ‘majority rule’...

Puleeeze.

You’re right and they’re not calling it “nuclear option” on the news shows regularly, are they?

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_tricarefees_blocked_100709w/

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.
Snip The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.
