>>Any current misconduct? I would hate to be judged by what I did 25 years ago.<<

My take as well. At least he didn’t drown her.

“Joseph Smith would be proud of Garn.”

So would John Edwards. That said, it’s hard to imagine the Senate giving him a standing ovation for his recent confessions (although if memory serves well, many Democrats “stood by their man” Bill Clinton during and after his impeachment: regardless of whether felony lying before a grand jury or subornation of perjury were grounds for removal from office, his behavior was despicable and in a perfect world he would have been shunned and offered his resignation for his shameful behavior instead of boasting about how he’d beat a partisan witchhunt).

Ummm, other than the fact that at 15 even is she is sexually mature - she is jailbait.

A person with judgment knows how to turn away from the “temptations” of a 15 year old - I mean a person whom we trust with enacting law that is.

Garn knew if this information came to light, his political ambitions would be toast. THAT is why he paid the exortion. To save his political hide.

>>Does Ted Kennedy get a pass on what he did 41 years ago?<<

No, but that is rooted in the reasonable fact that there is a reason for differing statutes of limitations.

Consider the sobering fact that the American Republic is in the early phase of its long road to Caesarism. Homosexuality and other vice addictions are becoming the norm for politicians at all levels. Further, many of the b*stards, when caught, refuse to resign.( i.e. ‘Ole Teddy’ comes to mind). Add to the aforementioned graft, raiding various taxpayer funded programs, stuffing ballot boxes wealth transfer from Americans to third worlders. In short, all that is foul and corrupt is now the expected ‘Norm’ from elected representatives. Not good!

That is but a legal thing (and laws of this sort are quite arbitrary) - and the same legal system says it is irrelevant now. For me it is really moot, unless she is not the only one and it is ongoing. Everyone makes mistakes. I did not make this particular mistake when I was younger, but I made other ones. I assume we all did, to one degree or another.

I am not questioning the morality of it at the time, I am questioning its current relevance.

In San Francisco “Standing Ovation” has an entirely different connotation. Sort of like “raise the flag”.

Unless there were witnesses he could've survived simply by staying quiet. It was a long time ago.

The bribe money was a de facto admission of guilt.

Ironically, the guy's conscious was his downfall.

kennedy DID get a pass on killing Maryjo.

There is a difference between MURDER and being naked with an underage girl in a hottub.

If he molested her she should have said something at the time. He should be charged with a crime for paying her 150k to shut her up.

I don’t remember being in a hottub with any underage girls 25 years ago, but I didn’t ask for id from everyone I was in a hottub with. haha

He was 30 and she was 15? That alone does not really concern me.

Spoken like a man with no daughters. There is no dad on the planet who would not be concerned about a 30 year old naked man in a hot tub with his 15 year old daughter.

A lawmaker that breaks laws then pays to hide it is an issue.

I don’t really care if it is statutory rape, illegal drugs, murder, unpaid taxes, or unpaid traffic tickets.

The public has the right to know and decide if he is fit to enact law.

I’ve done some “things” that I don’t want to come to light either. That’s one reason I don’t run for office. Someday I might be strong enough to face the music and run, but when I do, I’d better be prepared to air my dirty laundry - so the public can determine my character - it is their right!

That’s exactly why I asked if there was any current misconduct.

There is a difference between being a pedophile and just being naked with an underage girl in a hottub.

If he molested her, he should be in jail

Are you a man? If so, would you take a 15 year old girl into an establishment that rents hot tubs by the hour? Would you then get into the hot tub naked?

If you answer yes, well, that says it all.

The guy is no different than the pervs that Dateline exposes. There’s damn few men that would share a naked dip in a hot tube with a woman without the having intent to get at the goodies. I have to question what set of circumstances that led to this happening in the first place.

>>He was 30 then, and married, she was 15 and his employee. He was also her Sunday school teacher before that.<<

This is interesting. I remember when I was 46 and married and was music director and Sunday School teacher for the high school aged kids at my church. One day a family came to the church that had three daughters. The middle daughter (around 14 or 15) was very cute and gregarious and at first I thought she was being nice to me. However, she started giving me the creeps because she seemed just, well, TOO friendly and attentive to me. She acted LITERALLY the way a woman that was coming onto me in not so subtle ways would act. I shook it off and assumed she was just learning how to act socially. It still made me very nervous to be around her and, of course, I always applied my “never find yourself alone with a single woman” rule. Nothing even remotely improper happened and I even discussed it with my wife in our normal day-to-day discussion about what’s going on in our lives.

It turned out I was not the only older guy she was treating this way. I left the church for completely unrelated reasons so I don’t know what ever happened with her or if anything improper ever happened between her and any other men.

After that experience, I will say this though: If a 30 year old guy ended up with her nude in a hot tub, he is not the one I would blame. And if he eventually became a high profile politician, he would be an excellent mark for a hundred grand or so.

>>How does a guy who makes $20,000 a year afford to give someone $150,000 in hush money?<<

That is the REAL story that should be investigated here.

The fact that he was an adult and her ‘superior’ makes it HIS fault. He is the one in charge, the adult the one who sets boundaries.

Along these same lines, I do understand your point, I know one teenage girl who had an affair with her ‘Seminary’ (HS age religion courses before school) teacher when she was 15 and he was 45. She was sure he was ‘in love’ with her.

Still doesn’t make it right.

And if his judgment is that poor, he shouldn’t be in a position of responsibility anyway.

My daugher, yes. But see my post 35. Also, I have three daughters, the youngest of which is 22. I have learned that not all 15 year old girls are created equal. I first learned this when I was 13 and my 15 year old female cousin was selling "peaks" to me and my younger male cousins for a nickel. By "peaks", I mean third base.

I agree. Until that question is answered, there is not enough there for most of us to have an opinion. I’ve known 15 year old girls that, if in this predicament, would be tramatized by it, while others would be the wolf in the situation.
