CO-Sen. 2010: Colorado Republican wraps up tough week on the trail (DeMint vs. McCain)
The Hill, Washington, DC ^ | 2010-04-16 | Sean J. Miller

Posted on 04/16/2010 11:58:07 AM PDT by rabscuttle385

Former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton (R) had a difficult week.

The Colorado Senate candidate announced Tuesday she was going to petition her way onto the August primary ballot, which prompted a swift rebuke from the Colorado GOP chairman. Now, she won't be allowed to speak or even have campaign signs at her party's state assembly May 22.

On Wednesday, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) endorsed Norton's chief primary opponent, Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck (R). "Based on the support Ken is getting around the state, I think he's in a very good position to get the votes he needs at the state convention to get on the August ballot," DeMint said in a statement. "This along with his performance in the precinct caucuses demonstrates real strength as a candidate. I believe that as the rest of the state meets Ken Buck, he will continue to surge in the polls and win this critical election."

DeMint's endorsement has in the past been coupled with a contribution from his PAC, Senate Conservatives Fund, and it's backers.

(snip)

DeMint's support has become a counter-weight to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is backing Republican Carly Fiorina in California and Norton in Colorado. McCain also backed Kirk in Illinois and he has supported Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) in the past.

What is the big objection to Norton?

She’s in the best position to beat the Dem’s here in Colorado.

She did her best to sabotage Colorado’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Her reasoning was that undermining TABOR was the only way to save TABOR. Doesn't sound conservative to me. She's a McCain puppet. This article also explains more:

Norton

I'm going with Ken Buck

To be fair to Norton she was Lt. Gov. when Gov. Owens came out in support of Ref. C&D. Owens split the party on this, with a fair number of Republicans supporting his position.

I did not, I opposed Ref. C&D, but that division, along with divisive Senate and Gov. primaries contributed greatly to the Dems running the table the last two elections.

We shouldn't re-fight those battles but should unify going into the fall. This is too important an election to fight among ourselves.

IMHO, Norton is no RINO and would make a fine candidate. I think Buck would be a fine candidate - my only objection to him is he's little known outside Weld County. But, if DeMint and some other national money comes his way he could remedy that.

I believe that Ken Buck is more in tune with the conservatives here in Colorado. I have had the opportunity to meet Ken in person and he comes off as a genuine conservative who believes in many of the same ideas as I do. I also told him to his face that if he screws over the conservative movement after he wins his senate race his ass can and will be voted out of office.

Jane is disappointing on many fronts, the foremost being her refusal to attend the state assembly in Loveland. How will she stand up to the viciousness of the left and their agenda if she wont even attend her own party’s assembly. Boo-hoo I may not win so I am not even going to try.

State Senate #6 assembly is tommorrow and I am going to lobby as many people as I can to support Ken Buck. Not to mention our local Tea Party in Durango.

That being said, if Jane wins the primary I would still vote for her in the general. We fight our battles in the primary - that is why we have them.

Conservatives: Beware of McCain Regression Syndrome By Michelle Malkin

"In Colorado, McCain and his meddlers infuriated the state party by anointing former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton to challenge endangered Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet. She's a milquetoast public official who has served on a lot of task forces and GOP clubs -- and who happens to be the sister-in-law of big Beltway insider Charlie Black. An estimated 40 percent of her coffers are filled with out-of-state money (and much of that is flowing from the Beltway).

The mini-McCain of Colorado claims to oppose "special interests," but has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from D.C. lobbyists at McCain's behest -- stifling the candidacies of strong conservative rivals led by grassroots-supported Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, an amnesty opponent whose aggressive illegal-immigration prosecutions have earned him the rage of the far left and big-business right. A recent Rasmussen poll showed Buck and GOP candidate Tom Wiens beating Bennet -- despite the huge cash and crony advantage of frontrunner and blank-slate Norton."

2005/01/12 McCain introduces a bill (S1033) on the floor of the Senate, during the first session of the 109th Congress.  It's co-authors are Ted Kennedy, Brownbeck, Lieberman, Graham, and Salazar.  The bill among other things, initiates a study (Section 1004) on how to set up a system where U.S. health insurers can become bi-national, providing health insurance to U.S. and Mexican citizens.  McCain was trying to set up a road to health care for Mexican nationals. Is this more infrastructure being 'harmonized' in the effort to establish a one hemispheric entity, the North American Union?  One must ponder, Is John MeCain our Senator, a Mexican Senator ruling from our side of the border, or a representative of the United Nations assigned to relegate the United States to a nation whose citizens have absolutely no way to affect the laws they are subject to?  If we're just part of the North American Union, what real sovereignty will we have?  What ability will we have to demand our laws be changed, if two other nations want those laws because they favor them?

2010/04/14 McCain gets testy, "Agitated McCain: Don't call me a maverick" saying he never thought of himself as a 'Maverick'.  Strangely the last few days are the first times he has objected to the title.  His face used to light up with an ear to ear grin when they began labeling him as one eight to ten years ago.  He was the darling of the leftist Talking Head shows for nearly a decade for this reason alone.  He was willing to carp at the expense of his own party and fellow members, buttressing the leftist paradigm.  More links (1) (2) (3)  See also: Peak Maverick this LINK, explaining in part why McCain was first called a Maverick.  It started in 2001, and McCain reveled in it.
2010/04/14 McCain is described by former Congessman Tom Tancredo as "a squish", "a liberal Republican".  Harsh comments at link, explaining what McCain would have been like if elected president.
2010/04/16 McCain, a search of his big donors in 2008, reveals some interesting figures.  Mr. Campaign Finance Reform himself, always a big mouth about how much money floats around Washington, D.C. corrupting other politicians, and himself pushing through un-Constitutional legislation to limit such donations, had a sure fire method to make sure he got his.  Speaking of crooked, I can only wonder, was he speaking from experience?

“McCain and his meddlers infuriated the state party by anointing former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton to challenge endangered Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet. She’s a milquetoast public official who has served on a lot of task forces and GOP clubs — and who happens to be the sister-in-law of big Beltway insider Charlie Black.”

Charlie Black is a RINO too.
