A defense lawyer is calling for calm after death threats have been made against teenagers charged in the death of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince, who committed suicide after she was allegedly bullied by schoolmates.
"Not to minimize what happened to Phoebe Prince in any way, but translating this into death threats and public harassment has got to stop," says Colin Keefe, who represents Sharon Chanon Velazquez, accused of tormenting Prince, who hanged herself on Jan. 14.
"It's gotten way out of control," adds Keefe, who says Velazquez has been driven temporarily from her home.

Oh, poor babies. Well how does it feel to be bullied.
I love the smell of irony in the morning.
“. . . has got to stop.” His client is doomed. Never have an illiterate in the role of your criminal defense lawyer.
Kind of sounds like the shoe is now on the other foot...Now they know maybe a little of what their victim went through and it’s just beginning for them....

That is exactly what I was thinking! How does it feel to have the same thing you did to her happen to you?
Tough. My family went through this same thing for 4 years. It changed everything. I have no sympathy.
Since they won’t get the death penalty, this is just as good. Bad to the point of being driven from her home.
The comments are pretty great coming as they are from people my age. Shows how enraged so many people are and it’s heartening.
When the lawyer was asked exactly why the death threats needed to be stopped, he said:
“Well, c’mon now, do you know how hard it is to get payment from a dead client?”
Maybe someone should send her enough rope to ease her pain.
has to stop, huh? nah, I don’t think so.
Not sure what your age is. I’m glad people are outraged. This same thing happened to us back in 1989. It went on for 4 years. The principal was “boys will be boys” and the police said if we filed charges, it would get worse. This incident caused me to start researching and investigating to find the cause. As a result, I started the first anti-feminist yahoo group 12 years ago. However, I still remain an advocate of education, not legislation. Slippery slope.

I’m 26.
It’s only a matter of time until one of them breaks and saves taxpayer money. I just know that some of them are not going to make it to the trial without at least attempting something.
And I’m 58. You are younger than my youngest child, but you understand, and for that, I am grateful. Kudos.
Your welcome. I was viciously bullied in Interior Design and the teacher did nothing. This reopens a lot of wounds for some reason.
I fully understand. And I am so sorry.
I’d say it got way out of control before the girl killed herself.
I actually want these kids to live, and be shunned for the rest of their lives for being the soulless creatures that they are. And maybe if they have children, they will teach them that bullying is not harmless.
I don’t understand why they’re so shocked...what goes around... If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime!
“public harassment has got to stop,”
Ironic isn’t it?
Two wrongs don’t make a right. While I do not condone death threats, I also feel no sympathy for these teenage jerks.
Let this be a lesson to them: you reap what you sow. They should repent their sin, and live by the Golden Rule going forward. May God have mercy on their souls, cause I don’t think the jury will.
Personally no sympathy from me Karma sometimes comes around pretty quick....If there had not been a fuss, who might have been their next victim....The only thing that cures a bully is someone bigger and stonger and not afraid. Get their a$$ kicked a few times might make an impression, but nothing less than that would do it....
Maybe they are, maybe they're not. But to me this isn't about legislation, but teachers and parents and fellow students not having the balls to step up and say "This isn't right, stop it." We now need legislation to TELL us how to properly act when someone is being mistreated.
This is the legacy of FDR. Before him, people took care of their neighbors, looked out for each other. Since him, "It's the government's job" is the response to all ills.
And frankly, males are being raised to be ashamed they have a pair, or, alternately, to think that bullying a GIRl is somehow appropriate behavior for a guy.
Too true. Like I said I will not condone death threats, but I feel absolutely no sympathy for them - none.
you shoulda told those bullies that if it didn’t quit you were gonna dump their martha stewart wall paint right over their heads.
What goes around comes around.
That being said, I was bullied in the 6th grade. It was racial. The teacher was black, the kids were black, I was white (still am, for some reason), and it was a miserable situation. I hated school for the first time in my life, and I had no kind of recourse to deal with what was going on. When my parents confronted the teacher, she accused me of lying and of blowing the situation out of proportion. It was six months of torture. These jerks who bullied Miss Prince did so mercilessly, at every opportunity. Everywhere she turned, there they were, talking trash or threatening her, every day. I hope they feel what she felt, and that it goes on until they repent of the evil they did to that girl. Payback's a b*tch, and there's a lot in the bank for them.
The lawyer for Valezquez says “public opinion will change when the full story is out.”
That better be one hell of a good story.
That’s a shame.
I’m going to lose a lot of sleep worrying about these poor teenage targets of death threats.
Abolish schools. Problem solved.
Which welcome? His welcome?
That welcome over there, or the other welcome over there?
Or perhaps your welcome? Certainly not my welcome.
Thank you for being a great teacher.
I’m sorry to hear that; that sort of bullying is plain evil. Check out the comments at the DU: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8164447 I never thought we would have that much in common.
While they are at it, they can claim they had loved ones killed on 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, or Virginia Tech. That won’t fly with me for sure.
Cry me a river.... as their torments begin. It’s called payback seven fold.
