A far bigger Icelandic volcano, Katla, is tipped to erupt in the coming months, potentially causing much more savage and sustained disruption to industry and society. Eyjafjallajokull erupted on 14 April, forcing European governments to impose a no-fly zone. Each time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted in the past 2,000 years – in 920, in 1612 and between 1821 and 1823 – Katla has exploded within six months.

Ummmm....Europe screwing Iceland in the financial meltdown Iceland had and is still in the middle of. Looks like the Euro-peons are feeling the payback.
Sure they did, but they paid a high cost in famine, population dislocations, and other ruination.
They also didn't have a materially advanced culture, dependent on massive interconnections and high technology, like we do today. Look at what just a few days of air travel disruptions did to Western Europe.
I've read that the last time these two volcanoes erupted, it went on for two years. At least one of those years has been dubbed, "the year without a summer". The 1793 eruption caused the global temperature to drop so hard, that the Mississippi froze clear down to New Orleans.

I actually think the plume over Europe was God intervening in some nasty Islamic doings, or preventing a plan of some other diabolical nature....shutting down the air travel..tsk tsk...who do people thing they are fooling with!

The Laki volcano eruption occurred in the June of 1783 in Iceland killing many thousands and spreading a massive haze that covered most of Europe and parts of North America. This cloud was even reported to have extended into Asia and North Africa.
In its wake, the Laki Volcano eruption, although beginning in Iceland created widespread famine across Europe when the weather pattern changed so dramatically that it affected vital crops in the summer months and saw the loss of livestock.
