FR's new IP address
Chuck | 21st June | Chuck

Posted on 06/21/2010 12:21:21 AM PDT by chuck_the_tv_out

Probably not many people noticed, but FR changed its IP address over the weekend, from 209.157.64.201 to 209.157.64.200.

I only noticed because I had hard coded the address to my HOSTS file.

I just wanted to remind the admins that there are many links to 209.157.64.201 out there. Search any search engine for site:209.157.64.201 to see.

I don’t know. It seemed out to me for about 24 hours, but that’s because I had the wrong IP address in my HOSTS file.

You were saying ...

Probably not many people noticed, but FR changed its IP address over the weekend, from 209.157.64.201 to 209.157.64.200.

I've seen both of them used over the years. Originally it was 209.157.64.200 and then it was 209.157.64.201 for a while. And apparently now it's back to the original again.

That's why there are DNS servers out there, so you don't have to use IP numbers ... LOL ...

Just stick to http://www.freerepublic.com/ as that's the way you're supposed to use it so you don't run into problems like you've just mentioned ... :-)

Hoo-boy! there are a lot there, too ... :-)

FR is moving like its using an old 286 Tandy with 1meg of ram as for a server.

True - I didn’t know about that. They should both be active then!

I often see 201 come up in searches though - I don’t think I’ve ever seen 200

I’ve seen it flip back and forth between those two numbers, it’s not even funny ... :-)

I’m not exactly sure why it does, but I’m suspecting it has something to do with a DOS attack... and that’s why it’s switched at times ... but I could be way off on that idea, so don’t take it as something authoritative ... :-)

When I ping www.freerepublic.com it resolved to 209.157.64.201 and it time out.

You meant you hardcoded \Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts or Apple and Linux /etc/hosts

added line

209.157.64.200 www.freerepublic.com

?

Yes. I’ve had it on 201 for over a year. I thought because there were links out there to 201, it would be permanent

That's cool!  8-)

I always modify HOSTS file to block unwanted parasites and even banner ads whether I'm using Apple or Linux or the most insecure Microsoft Windows.  See http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.

Two or multiple IPs are usually for redundancy, since DNS will resolve them if you don’t hardcode it. Sometimes one of the IPs may be used for cashing or CDN servers, such as sometimes different IPs used for www.freerepublic.com and freerepublic.com

Try pinging yahoo.com and www.yahoo.com and you’ll see the difference.

It’s all Greek to me. Just happy to know I wasn’t going crazy. Was beginning to have withdrawal symptoms when I couldn’t get on yesterday! Glad it’s back to normal today!

I wondered if Obama was testing his new “kill switch” toy.

I’m so low tech, I don’t save host numbers. I just save the addy to my favorites.
