What We Can Learn from Yesterday's Primary
redstate.com ^ | June 23, 2010 | Tabitha Hale

Yesterday was a glorious one for the movement.

Nikki Haley won in South Carolina - which really wasn't a surprise. Gresham Barrett embarrassed himself by even staying in the race, but I suppose it was even more entertaining that way...

Utah was a less certain situation. In the absence of any credible polling, no one really had a handle on how either candidate was doing. Mike Lee had a great week going in. Everyone on the ground had anecdotal input...which means exactly nothing when the numbers start coming in.

Mike Lee is a solid small government candidate. There was a stark contrast between him and Tim Bridgeway, the establishment candidate who proved he'd break on the side of big government when challenged in the form of TARP and Medicare Part D. It was a clear establishment vs. movement moment, and we came out victorious.

What we proved yesterday is that conservative principles win. Small government wins. Less spending wins. We don't need a Sarah Palin endorsement or millions and millions of dollars. We don't need to compromise our message and try to play to both sides of the aisle. Candidates: Be conservative. Articulate your message. Engage the grassroots.

We can win because we're right.

Yes, it was a good day for the "movement," which might be why Obama decided to choose today to push the primary results into the background by meeting with Gen. McChrystal at the White House.

But the acid test lies ahead in November. Let's not get overly excited too soon.

Nobody’s mentioning it, but didn’t the guy who lost in Utah try to drag down Jim DeMint and Nikki Haley in SC? I didn’t even understand the connection, but I think that the voters in both states, SC and UT, proved that they weren’t going to be snookered by any such shenanigans.

So is Bob Bennett going to support the more conservative nominee who beat his endorsement by a narrow 2%? Or, is he going to campaign for the Democrat like a true RINO?

From what I’ve heard, you are correct on both points.

Nikki Haley and Tim Scott shoved the lie right back down their intolerant, racist, bigot throats.

Long live T E A!

Just saw something interesting: the district that Tim Scott was nominated in (SC-1) has sent a Republican to Congress since 1980. So his chances in November appear to be good. BTW, Palin and Huckabee endorsed him a few days before yesterday's runoff. If elected, I believe he will be the first black Republican from a formerly Confederate state in the House since about 1900.

Yes, George White of NC (1897-1901) was the last Black Republican Congressmember from a Southern State. The Democrats implemented Jim Crow laws to drastically curtail Black participation in politics, otherwise Black Republicans would’ve been consistently elected to office from Reconstruction onwards.
