Germany humiliate old foes England [4-1]

Germany's thrilling strike force tore apart old rivals England to reach the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday in a 4-1 win marked by an extraordinary blunder from the Uruguayan referee who ruled out a good goal.

- In an incident-packed game at Bloemfontein's Free State Stadium, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski took advantage of some shambolic defending by the Three Lions to put Germany 2-0 up after 32 minutes before Matthew Upson headed one back

Minutes later, a shot by England's Frank Lampard went over the goalkeeper, hit the bar and bounced behind the goal-line.

But neither referee Jorge Larrionda nor his assistants saw the goal, and waved play on.

The sense of injustice burning among England's legions of passionate fans dimmed, however, when Thomas Mueller scored two in quick succession in the second half.

Podolski and Klose are actually Poles who emigrated to Germany as adults or near adults, I don’t quite remember. I’ve heard they even have dual citizenships.

Not quite correct. Podolski came to Germany as a two-year old. And while both his parents were Poles, his paternal grandparents held German citizenship, which means that under German law he was always considered German (as a side note: there are countless Israelis who if they choose to apply will be granted a German passport under the same law). And while Podolski has indeed Polish citizenship, too, he grew up as a German.

Klose came to Germany at the age of 8, but as his last name suggests, his father is from an ethnic German background, which is not uncommon for the Opole (ger.: Oppeln, Upper Silesia) region. Klose has never renounced his Polish citizenship, but when asked to play for Poland, he replied that he had a German passport.

Preventing self-defence or otherwise preventing evil is about the only justifiable reason not to play ‘fair’ in this world. Doing it when playing a game or for personal gain like this is demonstrating a damnable lack of integrity and making excuses for it is cynicism masquerading as wisdom....

It was a beatiful game and I think Germany scored a deserved win.

That said, it’s a mystery why FIFA is so entrenched in their “3 ref” system. UEFA’s already put in dedicated goal-area refs on European cup matches for this very reason. It hasen’t (usually) got anything to do with bad refereeing, it’s just that 2 refs can’t be everywhere and see everything at once. In this case, the shot was from a distance, the head ref is busy controlling the outfield and the assisting is following the offside-line. With the speed and power of that shot, I’m more surprised this kind of stuff doesn’t happen more often.

Get off your asses, FIFA, and add those damn goal-referees.

AGREE we have a 4th official on the side which can have a monitor.
it would only take secs to give a decision and right now decisions are costing clubs in Europe millions, promotions etc .
There’s too much money to lose or gain right now and we need to use vid tech/
The game and tech has moved forward and it is high time for FIFA to do so too.

Not saying for every tackle etc but for situations like today or pens..

FIFA has been corrupt with Blatter for years and he needs to go too

No, offsides happen and someone still has to score. The offside itself does not result in a goal until the ball is in the net. When someone takes a dive in the box and the other team gets a goal on the free kick, that’s all part of the game. The team benefiting from the bad call should not give up a goal in return.

This is a very different story. This is a clear goal missed by the officials and Germany knew it at the start of the second half. And you are wrong to assume there is no place in sports for decency and honor. The acceptable risk is what, that you shouldn’t expect honor from your opponent ?

You are confusing what athletes should expect, that they are going to get screwed, with what I amm talking about, “sportsmanship”. Of course bad calls are a part of every game, but that doesn’t mean your opponent can’t right a wrong.

As a friend of mine once said, “Always expect the lowest ethical standards in any professional sports”. And that’s what Germany gave us today.

And again, I would expect the very same from every single team in here, including the US, win no matter what. It was the officials fault, these things happen in Sports, other bad calls result in goals. All of it’s an excuse for not doing the decent thing. Germany probably still would have won, the British defense wasn’t strong enough against the German forwards, but winning like that - nothing to celebrate.

"No, offsides happen and someone still has to score."

Goals improperly disallowed happen too. Argentina scored because they were offsides. By your own standard of decency and honesty, clearly Argentina should have allowed Mexico to score a goal because they knew beyond doubt after the halftime that the goal call was incorrect.

You just broke your own silly standard of decency. You just destroyed the chance of Mexico while favoring giving England a special treatment.

I am all for decency and honesty in sports, which means playing by the rules. Part of the rules is the official makes the call. You want to break the inherent rules of the game that are accepted by the players when they take the field. For you to claim otherwise is totally inappropriate sportsman like conduct.

It would actually be unfair and indecent of England to accept a goal from Germany knowing that a bad call could happen either way. But you are entitled to your sore losing opinion that smacks of communist redistribution of fairness. I would be surprised if anyone else who regularly follows sports shares it.

Sorry but i have to dissagree on this one. Germany had nothing to do with this. The US team would do the same... Everyone will and/does the same! Is it fair? Hell NO! But at the end (soccer just represents the status of the world)
It´s just a game played in this world. So YES it was a wrong call but don´t blame the german players because of this because the english would have acted the same.
Fair? Hell no! but as said bevore the world is not fair.
Never was. Never will be.
Germany won! This is all people are interessted.
Not good but then again this is the world we are living.
And again NO TEAM would have acted different!
So blame the unfair world YES! But don´t blame especially germany because this is how it is.
England would not have acted different if they would had the luck! I guarantee you this.

By your standard of fair and decent sportsmanship, you are going to have to sort this one out and not sweep it under the rug. Eventually you will kill the sport and we will all be watching lawyers - lol!

Maradona rejects injustice talk
Diego Maradona brushed aside controversy over Argentina's opening goal in their 3-1 victory over Mexico by claiming referees are overlooking "scandalous" treatment of Lionel Messi.

From before the World Cup started, I mentioned that both the USA and English back line defenses were slow and unathletic. Turned out I was correct about both teams.

Both goal keepers also have a reputation of leaving too much space at the near post on shots from an angle and based on the goals scored against them, the opposing teams took advantage of those tendencies.

Just think of how bad it could have been if Ballack was not injured.

or Rio F, or possible Beckham.

It is not a team sport but a squad sport and one only has ot look at Argentina to see that and their depth.
Zanetti, Cameassa(sp) are left back in Argentina and that shows their depth.

Man, that’d be something for history. It’d live long beyond a tournament played every four years, and certainly beyond a measly round of 16 match. A country that did that would get a huge reputation gain. It’d also snub FIFA’s nose in it.

In a similar vein, I thought Mexico was going to walk off the field today after the offside goal was given to Argentina. How would FIFA react to that?

Not particularly. I am especially not fond of those poofters who invoke the "special relationship."

I have no personal animus towards the English, but nor do I feel any sense of "brotherhood" towards them relative to the other European nations.

First of all, I’m an American you dumbarse, Nebraska is in America. Plus Ireland beat France but was robbed. Plus England is a cold, wet nightmare, and I found myself routing for Germany. Plus I think that if there were not 50 million Germans in America during the 1940’s the UK would be speaking ze German right now, and Churchill would be buried in Canada.

I never said I wished the Nazi’s had won the war, I said the Germans, and I was joking as you suggest. If the Germans had won the war the Nazi’s would have killed 15 million Jews instead of 6 million, and that is a bad thing. But I have sort a new found distrust for the British. After 9/11 I’ll bet there were about 1 in 3 Brits that were glad it happened, and not just the Arab-Brits. Also the English soccer team is so overrated it’s funny.

Congratulations to Germans...As for the Lampard’s disallowed goal...Refs screwed up...Don’t blame Germans...

Why not a replay just to find out if the goal goes in or not?
Just a replay for that only...Nothing else...

Now MLB allows a replay to find out if a ball hit is a homerun or not...

Why not FIFA? I think that FIFA is a corrupt organization.

I am disappointed with the English team...It did worse than in 2006...In 2006, England went up to Elite Eight...Remember that Portugal beat England and moved onto Final Four...

However, this time, England did better than Italy and France...I think Portugal will be eliminated after Tuesday...Spain will beat Portugal...

I don’t fault the players, I doubt if they could really see what happened.

Check out my post here and the ensuing post with link.

The German goalie knew the ball went in but pretended to play it as if it didn't go in to fool the refs. He talked about it in an interview after the game.

It worked.
