Germany humiliate old foes England [4-1]

Germany's thrilling strike force tore apart old rivals England to reach the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday in a 4-1 win marked by an extraordinary blunder from the Uruguayan referee who ruled out a good goal.

- In an incident-packed game at Bloemfontein's Free State Stadium, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski took advantage of some shambolic defending by the Three Lions to put Germany 2-0 up after 32 minutes before Matthew Upson headed one back

Minutes later, a shot by England's Frank Lampard went over the goalkeeper, hit the bar and bounced behind the goal-line.

But neither referee Jorge Larrionda nor his assistants saw the goal, and waved play on.

The sense of injustice burning among England's legions of passionate fans dimmed, however, when Thomas Mueller scored two in quick succession in the second half.

That was a clinic.

But I don’t want the Germans to complain any more about the call in the ‘66 Final. It’s all ‘Even Stevens’ now.

Well, you know it’s a different world when people with names like Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski are called GERMANS.

Big respect for England who played a very clean and fair game.

score should have been 4,2 and if they teams were level at half time then England would not have come out looking to that goal so early and throw players forward to get caught out.

Still in the end Germany played better but to say humiliate is a little deceiving. ..

Both teams played to a place where no other teams have played and that was no moaning, no nothing but get on with the game as it should be.

I saw an interview with Alan Shearer and he said it was so bad he did not even know where to start to discuss the loss. The English are taking it very hard it seems.

I knew you would make an appearance. Congrats on the clinic in counterattack football. The English back 4 were awful.

An outstanding German team and effort made the English look very ordinary — not bad but just ordinary.

Watched USA-Ghana and Germany-England. What I wanna know is WHY countless (outrun) Ghanians writhed on ground “hurt” whenever the US got the ball, whereas the Germany-England match was free of such obviously fake spectacles.

Congrats Germany, you won it handily.

Couldn’t have happened to a “nicer” or more “humble” group of fans. You don’t see me crying any tears for perfidious Albion.

England looked slow and lethargic. But, that being said, if the goal was counted and the score was 2-2...who knows how that may have affected the remainder of the game. Germany’s last 2 goals were on counterattack breaks where England were pushing forward to get the equalizer. Germany was impressive but FIFA needs goal line technology.

The only goal line technology FIFA needs are better sets of eyes.

Sometimes I think England would have been better off if the bloody Germans had won the war! England is a mess on the field and off!

It’s the price England has had to pay for the success of the English Premier League.

English clubs aren’t interested in developing local talent, they want to buy it from everywhere else.

And they have high-profile players, with their WAGS and too many other distractions.

How many of the German players are considered superstars? Podolski and Klose hardly tear it up with their clubs, but they are a perfect fit for the way Die Mannschaft play.

As I said in another thread, England would perform better in the World Cup, if they used players from The Championship (the division lower than the Premiership), you may not get the level of talent, but you’d get more cohesion and fewer player personnel issues. There are always too many prima donnas on England.

And in retrospect, Terry not only should have been stripped of his captaincy, he should have been left off the squad entirely, he was dreadful (maybe even on purpose just to spite Capello), but again that’s what you get with a team of prima donnas.

To be fair, here are some pics of the action that should be included:

Germany was the far superior team, and likely would have won by 1 or 2 anyway. But incompetent refereeing (esp. at this level & venue) is uncalled for...
