There are some who say the same about the ping-pong game that is NBA basketbrawl.

But, hey, to each his own....

A true sports team would have seen at half-time that it was a goal and in the first minute of the second half let England run down the field and score an uncontested goal.

But not the Germans, not in the World Cup where winning at all costs, even honor, is all the matters.

A black eye for the sport and the World Cup.

Compare that to Brian Davis in golf a few months back, calling attention to a 2 stroke penalty no-one else saw or called. And it was in a playoff that cost a possible win.

It doesn't matter Germany won 4-1. If they had given England a goal and the half started at 2-2, both teams would have played differently from then on.

However far Germany goes, it's a soiled trip. Disgraced themselves and the game today.

I would expect someone named Carl or Joe to possibly be Americans. If their names were Karl or Karloman or Jozep or Josef, well, I might wonder.

I don’t fault the players, I doubt if they could really see what happened. Maybe in hindsight they might have considered it. I would imagine they would have preferred the call was gotten right as well, because it does tarnish the win a bit.

There have always been a lot of Poles living in Germany, who keep Polish names, but who are thoroughly German.

SHHHUUURRRE!!! I mean dream on.
I guess all player who fall without contact in the box are
just tired (because a real sportsman would never provoke a fake penatlty or something like that.) Don´t you love it when all the players run to the referee and tell him Please i didn´t score REALLY NOT because i may have used my hand or please the other team really deserves a penalty kick.
Get real!

As evil as it was Nazism was, it also was a flame that would have burned itself out in short order. Hitler was dying and without him it wouldn't have lasted more than a few years. Nobody knows for certain if things would have been better or worse because there are so many years for things to have developed.

Besides, England losing would not have been the same as saying the US would have lost.

What I don't understand is how all the Western Countries have been involved in what for lack of a better term would be called a suicide pact. The real enemies are communism and even worse modern liberalism. They weren't destroyed in 1945 and they both linger in the minds of many today.

The two have absolutely no connection. The fact that the game is filled with cry-babies and dives at every opportunity, that penalty shots are scored after bad calls etc has nothing to do with a clear goal that was missed. In tennis, I have often seen a player let his/her opponent take the next point after a blantant missed call. As I mentioned, in golf players call penalty strokes on themselves all the time.

The Germans after half-time knew they were tied 2-2. The honorable thing would have been to let the Brits score. But your comment “Dream On” is accurate. There is very little decency and honor left in the world, if I could even assume a team in the World Cup would right an obvious wrong on a goal I must be delusional, I must be dreaming.

Golf is the only sport where players will hang themselves. In every other sport when bad things happen to the other team you just move on, the ref blows a call that puts points on your side or takes points off the other you just roll with it. That’s not just the Germans, and not just the world cup, that’s every country and every sport except golf. Certainly that’s part of golf’s charm, but it’s pretty silly to expect any team to just watch an uncontested goal happen to “make up” for the ref blowing it.

Oh those evil Germans (they have been born with the “evil gene” don´t they). I mean come on (btw. i have rooted against germany “I would have LOVED the fact that germany loses) But i guarantee you that NO team on earth would have done this. This is not playing in the garden with friends nor is it tennis where 1 point most times means nothing.
Ok the WC is not this much about money for the team.
It´s more national pride and prestige but anyway.
At this level you can not expect this fairness.
Just imagine your club is playing champions leage and you as
a player go to the referee and say sorry but my goal should not count because of... or whatever. Just imagine your team loses because of that. Guess what will happen. The president of this club would congratulate you for your fair play of course short after that he may ask you to hand over the 50 million Euros the club has lost because of you.

I remember went Jack Nickolaus played a round of golf with Clinton. The reporter and cameraman came up to them and ask them what their score was. Clinton gave some outrageous score.

Jack had a look of absolute disgust on this face.

Clinton was famous for getting mulligans.

That has been the case only since WWII. But since the 15th and 16th centuries there have been Germans with Polish sounding last names, however. You also used to find Old Prussians with Polish and German names. That was the case from the 13th century onward - especially among the junkers class of Prussia.

If the Germans had won the war it would have been a disaster for Britain and the rest of the world. If the Germans had conquered Britain they were prepared to deport to the continent all males 15-60. The occupation of Britain would have been brutal, not to mention the Jews from Europe who managed to escape the Nazi's clutches. Auschwitz would have been in "business" much longer.

Though the Germans a high profile team benefited from the blown call, I didn’t really mean it was because they were nasty Germans. You are right, any team in the World Cup would take this call. I’m not talking about a player who got away with a bad call, going to a ref and saying ‘Ooops that was hand ball, that shouldn’t count.” I don’t expect players to do that because over the course of a game all kinds of bad calls happen.

I think you are all missing my point, the honorable thing would have been to acknowledge the score, let England score to go 2-2. My comment isn’t so much about this incident in a World Cup game, but generally there is little civility or honor left anywhere on the planet, let alone a soccer field. I really didn’t expect Germany to let England even the score, not in this world. But it’s a very sad statement on the world we live in.

It would have been wonderful to have seen Germany do something noble. Or are you in fact making my point, too bad, sh*t like this happens all the time, it’s win at all costs, the refs are to blame for missing an obvious goal. I get the feeling you don’t think it would have been the right thing to do ?

No, perhaps we shouldn't expect anything better. But that doesn't mean we should agree with it or support it. This isn't war. Its a bloody game and we have a right to expect some fair play and decency...

That has been the case only since WWII.

You forget the massive Polish immigration to the Ruhr area in the late 19th century during Germany's industrialization. Lots of people living in that area (and others) today have Polish sounding names. Give it up, your first post was utterly foolish/pointless.

I said sometimes! England, the USA, and the dutch are all in a mess because of immigration. English politicians were the first to realize that by importing new voters that hate the old voters, you can get about 8 or 9 per cent right of the top of any election. America has a built in 12 percent that hates America, and another 10 percent that came here from latin America that does.

I forgot nothing.

“Lots of people living in that area (and others) today have Polish sounding names. Give it up, your first post was utterly foolish/pointless.”

No, actually my post was perfectly sound and had a good point - Germany is much different than it once was. Take the two players mentioned, for instance, Podolski is a Polish born man who moved to Germany when he was two. He still holds Polish citizenship but travels with a German passport. Klose has a German last name, a slavic first name and was also born in Poland. His father was ethnically German (he might not have even known German before immigrating. That was very common when I lived in Germany and dealt with immigrants who used the “Right of Return” laws (if I recall, that’s Article 116 of the Bundesrepublik law code) to immigrate to Germany as Aussiedler or Spätaussiedler. Many of these people were Heimatvertriebene.

Both of the men in question are Poles by birth and only one of them is half-German by ethnicity.
