Mel Gibson's mainstream Hollywood career is over -- for real, this time
L.A Times ^ | July 9th, 2010

It's interesting to try to divine the chicken-and-egg of Mel Gibson's firing by WME last week: Was it his (first-alleged, now aurally proved) misogynistic and racist comments that enabled the agency to part ways with him, or was it the death of longtime agent Ed Limato that did the trick?

Earlier today the news surfaced that William Morris Endeavor had split with Gibson last week-- as Limato lay seriously ill, and just several days after Radar Online broke the news that Gibson had verbally abused his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva by using the N-word. (The reports were just that until today, when audio of the Gibson incident was released on Radar.)

There's of course a third variable in all this -- the fact that Gibson just wasn't much of a bankable star anymore anyway.

“Sorry, I see little difference between the words of Rev Wright and the words of Mel Gibson.”

Gibson was either drunk, or mistakenly thought he was speaking in private.

A person should not be excused for their hateful words simply because they are drunk.

It doesn’t bother you that he said these things in private and was recorded. I can’t imagine how bad I would sound if someone cherry picked comments from my moments of anger.

She wants MONEY.

There are several different drugs that can keep the Bi-Polar condition under control, but the problem with many, maybe even most people, who are Bi-Polar is they don't take their meds for a variety of reasons. They take their meds for a week or two, start feeling and behaving better, then stop. Oops, here we go again.

Let’s see Mel said: *The Jews are responsible for all the Wars*

REV WRIGHT:

Wright then commented on God and government:

“And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed.

She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese descent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps.

When it came to treating her citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains, the government put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton field, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into positions of hopelessness and helplessness.

The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, not God Bless America. God damn America — that’s in the Bible — for killing innocent people. God damn America, for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America, as long as she tries to act like she is God, and she is supreme.

The United States government has failed the vast majority of her citizens of African descent

Some say $60 M.

Others say $80 million plus another $20 million for marketing.

I'm not sure what this has to do with racism

More slurs were on that tape than just racist comments.

Gibson said that he got addicted to everything. I assume that also means sex. The trouble he has had with women, including the current one, additionally leads me to believe that he's got trouble in this area.

As far as Atlanta...Rochester, etc. I really have no idea.

“But for the media to declare his career over because of bad words said? Silly”

If Mel wants to work, he can work.

However, I’m not sure Americans want to see a film staring a man who goes on Anti-Semitic rants, and tells the mother of his child that she is going to be raped by a bunch of N-Bombs.

You see, we people here in Middle America do not want to support, with our hard earned dollars, a movie or an actor with such foibles.

At least Wright got some of it right.

Let’s remember that what Gibson said was said during what he thought was a private conversation (okay, “rant”). He was not speaking for public consumption.

Now, I’m not defending his use of racial epithets, just simply pointing out that the vast majority of us do not consistently use the same language and display of temperament around everyone with whom we interact. I will be honest and admit that the language I use around my friends is not the same language I necessarily use around my mother and younger nieces and nephews. Nor are some of the far-from-politically correct opinions I express privately what I would always want available for all the world to see and hear.

(For the sake of this particular argument, let’s compartmentalize this most recent revelation and forget the drunk-driving rants from a couple years ago -— just for a moment):

What are we saying here exactly? That in America, where we have free speech rights, a man’s livlihood should be taken away because we don’t approve of his private prejudices -— views expressed during a (supposedly) private argument? Have we not all said things in anger and used language we know might be particularly offensive to our opponent, intending to offend them, but without any intention of ever expressing such sentiments publicly or around people we respect.

I just know I would really not want the conversations I have in my most private moments publicized and then have my livlihood affected by the judgements other people make with information with which they are not entitled.

"I agree with this article. Mel Gibson has lost credibility with virtually everyone."

You forgot the most important part of the sentence: "until his next hit."
