Son of Pilot Who Dropped A-Bomb Opposes Plan to Send U.S. Delegation to Hiroshima Ceremony
Fox News ^ | August 4, 2010 | Joshua Rhett Miller

EXCLUSIVE:  The son of the U.S. Air Force pilot who dropped the first atomic bomb in the history of warfare says the Obama administration's decision to send a U.S. delegation to a ceremony in Japan to mark the 65th anniversary of the attack on Hiroshima is an "unsaid apology" and appears to be an attempt to "rewrite history."

James Tibbets, son of Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., says Friday's visit to Hiroshima by U.S. Ambassador John Roos is an act of contrition that his late father would never have approved.

"It's an unsaid apology," Tibbets, 66, told FoxNews.com from his home in Georgiana, Ala. "Why wouldn't it be?  Why would [Roos] go? It doesn't make any sense.

"I know it's the anniversary, but I don't know what the hell they're trying to do. It needs to be left alone. The war is over."

I visited the museum in Nagasaki that depicts the damage done by the atom bomb. I did it out of interest not remorse or doing a victory lap. I was two years old when we bombed Nagasaki. My father and four of his brothers were in the military including places like Tarawa, Salerno, and Anzio. I am sure some of them would have been involved in any invasion of Japan. I have no problem with our use of the weapon, which cut short the war and saved lives and destruction on all sides.

This is many things, and it’s a way for Obama to write himself into the history of WWII.

Have I said I hate Obama? I’m sure I must have.

They can spit in our faces on so many other fronts and Americans just sit there and take it, so why not go after our war history, and war heroes?

Americans don’t care anymore, lefty. Go right ahead and apologize for defeating our enemies. It makes perfect nonsense.

"Having found the bomb we have used it. We have used it against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Harbor, against those who have starved and beaten and executed American prisoners of war, against those who have abandoned all pretense of obeying international laws of warfare. We have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans. We shall continue to use it until we completely destroy Japan's power to make war. Only a Japanese surrender will stop us."
- Harry Truman, August 9, 1945.

Enough said.

The entire Tibbetts family is owed an apology for even considering an apology to the Japanese! Countless war crimes were committed by the japs in WW11! The bomb stopped it all and saved thousands or more lives. Paul Tibbetts was a hero for braving a plane with such a load and I’m sure suffered for years afterward grappling with such a responsibility.

I met Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets at a presentation/book signing held a few years back in Omaha, at the (then) SAC Museum.

He gave a brief presentation, then just talked a bit. It was very much like listening to stories your granddad would tell you, most not even having anything to do with "the bombing".

I still have the book he signed.

I remember a teacher in elementary school who said when word got out to the ships that the bomb was dropped, the soldiers danced.

Unless the US Delegation is going to say, “We’re glad we nuked you guys”, it has no business being there.

Wife and I visited the Arizona Memorial, the Missouri and the submarine memorial last March.
I would estimate 80 percent of the tourists were young Japanese. They all stayed at one hotel (about a block away from the beach front) and moved by the bus loads, all together. A Japanese woman with a police whistle directed the bus parking and loading.

to mark the 65th anniversary of the attack on Hiroshima

Thought experiment: Based on the conduct of the Japanese military in WWII and its run-up (Nanking, Pearl Harbor, Bataan, general POW and nurse treatment, etc.), if the Japanese High Command had been in possession of their own A-bomb, how long do you think they would have hesitated before using it against U.S. military and civilian personnel?

a) Five minutes.

b) Five seconds.

c) Please don't ask stupid questions.

Paul Schalow, a professor of Japanese at Rutgers University ... speculated that Roos' visit could be a step toward positioning the U.S. to condemn any future use of atomic weapons, perhaps by North Korea.

"If we show some regret of our own use of the weapon, if it happens again, we're in a moral position to criticize," he said. "As of now, we're not in a position to denounce it."

When we issue an communique to the still-glowing pile of molten debris that was once North Korea, we'll look pretty silly if it includes a denunciation of the use of nuclear weaponry...

You are right about the countless Japanese atrocities, which have been white-washed in Japan.

You are wrong about “suffering” or “grappling” over what he did. Many times people attempted to shame him into apologizing for what he did. His response till the day he died was he would do the same exact thing without hesitation.

Of course it is a tacit apology. An apology for being America is in order for this administration by reason of slavery prior to 1865.

I went to a book signing in Branson, MO

Tibbets, Ferebee and Van Kirk were there.

I thanked Tibbets for what they did. Very humbly he replied "we would like to think we made a difference".

Gen. Curtis LeMay’s firebombing killed a lot more Japanese than the nukes. They were too indoctrinated in the warrior cult to surrender then. My family is here today because of Tibbets. My Father-in-law was slated to be among the first troops to invade mainland Japan. Expected casualties 500,000=1,000,000
