Gen. Petraeus: Dove World Outreach Center's 'Burn a Koran Day' endangers US troops
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 09/07/2010 | Jonathan Adams

Posted on 09/07/2010 6:19:50 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.

Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.

The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.

General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.

""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

But a few months ago we heard that our troops are unhappy with the strict rules of engagement which require that they hold fire until they are certain that civilians would not be in the target area.

The resulting additional deaths of American troops made the enemy happy. Isn't that the goal?

Would it be better to have your Freedoms defended so that your Freedoms can be utilized wisely and constructively?

This is truly chilling.

How did I provoke 9/11?

You didn't. But if the burning provokes more violence in theater, then the burning becomes a killer of our troops. Tactics must change to suit the situation, particularly when you, at home and in a confortable place, can affect the well-being of those who defend your Freedoms. Why use your Freedoms to endanger your benefactors?

Hey, don’t criticize acts of pedophilia by the enemy! It might upset them.

Putting our troops at increased risk is not a decision made in isolation. Our troops are already in the presence of an enemy that wants to kill them. We make progress in the war as the enemy becomes convinced that our troops are superior and are backed by a country that does not act like cowards when the enemy throws a temper tantrum.

You think they hate us now.

You are an infidel. They are taught to hate you their entire lives. Their mission in life is to destroy you if you do not submit to the will of Allah.

Where have you been? These people don't need an excuse.

This is truly chilling.

So, you think that it is your duty to endanger our troops with your Freedom of Speech? Afterall, you aren't sitting in the sand right now. It would certainly be no skin off your back.

Use your Freedom of Speech more contructively. That is more responsible. You do understand "responsibility" don't you? You are responsible for the welfare of those who defend our way of life. It is not a one way street.

But if the burning provokes more violence in theater

If backing down gives the enemy a new victory to proclaim over American weakness and increase their recruiting, you're fine by that? The politics of appeasement serves their interests, not ours.

Have you considered that by reacting positively to the enemie’s emotional outburst you are empowering them and, by extension, putting our troops at higher risk?

I know. It’s frustrating watching the brainwashing of the idiots. I clicked on Bare Naked Islam this morning and there was a post about it being halal to sodomize an infant. The ayatollah had his way with a 4 year old girl that was given to him “in marriage for a night” by her father.

Are you saying if the church doesn’t burn the koran, our troops won’t be shot at and there will be no IEDs placed in their paths? Naive.

I want us to do everything possible to let the muslims know we have NO RESPECT for their evil death cult and we are not afraid of them. KILL THEM!

I’m not in an air conditioned office, and seldom am.

I submit that the ROE imposed on our troops by 0bummer and his thugs have killed more troops than any silly book-burning ever will.

Appeasement has never, nor will ever, work with these barbaric savages.

If we’re not there to win, then get the boots out of there with a warning to nuke the dump if they ever launch an attack on American soil again.

No boots necessary for that.

Appasement and hand-wringing over “world opinion” has gained us NOTHING but thousands of dead servicemen.

The world is gonna hate us anyway.

The MoHamHeads are gonna hate us and want to kill us anyway.

No point in worrying what they think about us.

These people ONLY UNDERSTAND AN EYE FOR AN EYE ... they kill a soldier, We kill a soldier

I have no problem with that. I just don't how it makes any sense for people who sit comfortably in an air-conditioned church to seed anger that results in a a few soldier's death. It is easy to taunt the enemy from afar while others soak up the bullets as a result of that taunt. If you wish to hurl insults, do it in person in theater.

Endangering our troops just you you can have a feeling of personal satisfaction does not strike me as being an act of a responsible citizen.

they’re demonstrating what Christians think of lies

Christians confront lies with truth from God's word. Not by burning the other fellows's book of lies. This action does nothing to advance the truth so it is pointless. God gets no glory from us publicly venting our spleens.

I just don't how it makes any sense for apologists who sit comfortably in an air-conditioned room to counsel more of the appeasement that has resulted in countless deaths of soldiers and civilians.

do not rebuff their religion

Islam is not a religion, nor is it a cult.  It is a complete system.

Islam has religious, legal, political, military, economic, and social components.  The religious component is a beard for all the other components.

Islamization occurs when there are sufficient Muslims in a country to agitate for their so-called “religious rights.”

When politically correct and culturally diverse societies agree to “the reasonable” Muslim demands for their “religious rights,” they also get the other components under the table -- primarily sharia -- and it's happening here.
