Gen. Petraeus: Dove World Outreach Center's 'Burn a Koran Day' endangers US troops
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 09/07/2010 | Jonathan Adams

Posted on 09/07/2010 6:19:50 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.

Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.

The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.

General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.

""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

Who exactly was in a good position to ask him privately?

Seriously? The President. The Secty of State. The DOJ.

Or any of the thousands of people who can be asked to represent them.

Rile them up? They hate us and they are killing us as we speak. Should I worry about whether or not they’re riled up?

We could solve the whole Afghanistan problem if we just converted all the Muslims there to Christianity.

LOL!

I'm aching for these mohammedite cultocrat apologists to give me the address of "First Christian Church, Mecca" and then explain why they can't find it on Google earth.

Who's the moron who thought this would be a good idea?

It's a great idea. The war on terrorism will last until the last moslem dies. If even one copy of the koran remains then we will eventually have someone stupid enough to choose to follow it and teh war starts anew.

You think they hate us now.

Yes they do. And they could not possibly hate us any worse. Kind of like democrats hate freedom. Nothing we do will EVER make them like us.

There is only one answer to islam and Ann Coulter hit it on the head. Conquer their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.

Way back when it was said that the arab is either at your throat or at your feet. This applies more generally to the moslem. We have allowed them to be at our throats for far too long. We need to put them back at our feet until we can eradicate them entirely.

I fully support nuking mecca and medina and every moslem city of over 50,000. I figure that would be a good start. If they want to behave like stone age barbarians then lets really put them back in the stone age.

Burning Korans is both stupid and useless.

Free speech is free speech.

If you support burning Korans, you support burning ANY book people don't agree with.

THINK about what you are saying here, people.

this has its source in Acts 19, so it isn’t pointless.

they’re demonstrating what Christians think of lies.

Then we kill them back, as we are currently doing in Afghanistan and Iraq. That's the way to deal with the muhammedians, not by performing stupid stunts like this.

Yes. This is still America, and we don't burn books here.

Our Founding Fathers would cringe at your words. FREE SPEECH.

Stupid acts like this serve no purpose other than to rile up these animals more than they already are. I thought we were better than they are?

When an animal is rabid you destroy it and burn anything that may have the disease in it. Hence burn a koran day.

The only problem is that we are allowing the rabid dogs to live.

Book burning on command of fascist regime = bad

Book burning by private citizens as an expression of free speech = good

If you want to burn a book you own. Have at it. It’s your book.

Would I burn a book? Well, I’ve never done it, but what else do you do with something you find utterly offensive? I’ll bet you wouldn’t object to burning books advocating pedophilia, bestiality, torture, etc.

Burn, baby, burn. Freedom sometimes means doing things about which others disagree. Heck...nobama and his ilk essentially have burned thew Constitution. I haven’t seen these appeasers getting their panties in a wad about that. Make sure you soak your copy of the koran in pig fat because some books are hard to burn.

Agreed. Why the tears of anguish over burning the Koran? Muslims are burning PEOPLE.

Wasn't it last month they murdered a dozen Christian doctors who were saving everything from eyes to lives in Afgahnistan?

I'm sure they had enormous cause for murdering those loving souls. I'll bet someone in the west wore a mini-skirt or something....we really need to crack down on that. Don't want the muzzies getting mad at us. No telling what they'll do.
